Release order works at series level, but three backdoor pilots, two cross-series two-parters and the 2009 CSI: Trilogy make the interleaved watch order the one that actually holds together.
- Games

The three Divergent novels read in publication order, no tricks: Divergent (2011), Insurgent (2012), Allegiant (2013). Doom Games in Order
There are seven mainline Doom games: the classics (1993, 1994), Doom 64, the parallel-universe Doom 3, and the modern Slayer saga (2016, Eternal, The Dark Ages). Release order works, but the canon timeline tells the better story, and it skips Doom 3 entirely.

- TV
Downton Abbey Watch Order
Downton Abbey is one continuous story: six TV seasons (2010-2015) followed by three films (2019, 2022, 2025). Watch in release order, which is also the story's chronological order, ending with The Grand Finale.

Rurouni Kenshin spans 11 entries: the 1996 series (three seasons, about 94 episodes), a movie, three OVAs, the 2023 remake (two seasons so far, season 3 in production) and five live-action films. Two doors in: the 1996 original or the 2023 remake.
- TV
S.W.A.T. Watch Order
Seven entries carry the S.W.A.T. name: the 1975 ABC series (2 seasons, 37 episodes) and its backdoor pilot on The Rookies, the 2003 film and its two direct-to-video sequels, Shemar Moore's 2017 CBS reboot (8 seasons, 163 episodes), and the Starz spinoff S.W.A.T. Exiles on September 25, 2026. Those are three separate continuities that never meet, so release order is safe. Only the 2017 line has to be watched in sequence.
- Anime
Sailor Moon Watch Order
Sailor Moon spans 13 entries across two doors: the 90s original (five seasons, 200 episodes, 1992-1996, plus three movies) and the faithful retelling Crystal (39 episodes, 2014-2016) continued by the Eternal films (2021) and concluded by the Cosmos films (2023). Pick one door; never interleave them.
- Books
Shadowhunter Chronicles Reading Order
Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter universe spans 25+ books grouped into sub-series and companion collections. The simplest way in is to read by sub-series rather than book-by-book, starting with The Mortal Instruments, or, if you prefer the in-world timeline, the Victorian prequel The Infernal Devices.
- Anime
Shaman King Watch Order
Shaman King spans 3 entries: the 52-episode 2021 remake (a faithful adaptation of the full 35-volume manga including its true ending), its 13-episode 2024 sequel Flowers, and the 64-episode 2001 series, a parallel alternate continuity with an anime-original ending. Watch the 2021 remake, then Flowers; the 2001 run and its 5 specials are an optional separate track.
- Books
Shannara Reading Order
Shannara spans 34 novels across eleven sub-series, and Terry Brooks' own advice for new readers is essentially publication order: start with The Sword of Shannara (1977). The chronological path exists but spoils the saga's biggest reveal, so save it for rereads.
- TV
Shrinking Watch Order
Shrinking spans 3 released seasons on Apple TV: season 1 (2023, 10 episodes), season 2 (2024, 12) and season 3 (2026, aired January 28 to April 8), which closed the original three-season arc. Season 4 was renewed early, has been filming since late May 2026, and adds Karen Gillan; no premiere date yet.

- TV
Silo Watch Order
Silo spans 3 released seasons and a confirmed finale: seasons 1 and 2 (2023, 2024) adapt Hugh Howey's Wool, season 3 (airing weekly through September 4, 2026) adapts Shift with its centuries-earlier origin timeline, and the renewed final season 4 will adapt Dust. Release order is the only order.
- Books
Skyward Books in Order
There are 9 entries in the Skyward series and its wider Cytoverse as of the Blightfall launch: 4 Skyward novels (2018-2023), 3 Skyward Flight novellas co-written with Janci Patterson (all 2021), the prequel novella Defending Elysium (2008), and Blightfall, book 1 of the new Riftwake trilogy, arriving September 1, 2026. Start with Skyward and Starsight in that order; after Starsight the path genuinely forks, and the three novellas are far less optional than they look.
- Anime
Slam Dunk Watch Order
Slam Dunk spans 6 anime entries: the 101-episode TV series (1993-96), four short side-story films from 1994-95 (each 30-45 minutes and non-canon), and The First Slam Dunk (2022), which adapts the manga's climactic Nationals match the TV series never reached. Watch the series, then the 2022 film as the finale.
- TV
Slow Horses Watch Order
Slow Horses spans 6 seasons (2022-2026), each adapting a Mick Herron novel in order: Slow Horses, Dead Lions, Real Tigers, Spook Street, London Rules, and season 6 (September 16, 2026) covering Joe Country and Slough House together. Season 7, adapting Bad Actors, is already renewed.

Soul Eater spans 2 entries: the 51-episode 2008 series and the 12-episode 2014 spinoff Soul Eater NOT!, plus the non-canon Late Night Show bonus shorts for completionists. Watch the 2008 series first; NOT! is set a year earlier but only works after the main show.
- Anime

The essential story path is just 6 stops: season 1, season 2, Liz, Our Promise, Ensemble Contest, season 3.
- Games
Splatoon Games in Order
Splatoon is four games: the 2015 original, Splatoon 2 (2017) with its essential Octo Expansion, Splatoon 3 (2022) with Side Order, and Splatoon Raiders (July 23, 2026), the first spinoff, a Switch 2 exclusive starring Deep Cut. Release order is story order.
- Movies
SpongeBob Movies in Order
There are six SpongeBob movies: four mainline films from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) to Search for SquarePants (2025), plus two Netflix spinoffs, the Sandy Cheeks movie (2024) and Plankton: The Movie (2025). Release order works, and every film stands alone.
- Games
Star Wars Jedi Games in Order
There are two Star Wars Jedi games. Play Fallen Order (2019) first, then Survivor (2023): one continuous Cal Kestis story set between Episodes III and IV.
- TV

- Games

The main-line Street Fighter games by release date, plus the tangled story timeline where the Alpha series is a prequel and both Street Fighter IV and V are set before Street Fighter III.

- Games
Suikoden Games in Order
All 14 Suikoden games plus the 2026 anime, in release order and in shared-world chronological order, built around the question the anime raises: it adapts Suikoden II, and no, you do not strictly need Suikoden I first.
- Games
Super Mario Games in Order
The landmark mainline Super Mario platformers in release order, from the 1985 original to the 2026 Switch 2 edition of Wonder, split across the 2D side-scrollers and the 3D adventures, with the remasters and enhanced editions you would actually buy today listed as their own steps. No story order required.

All six Terminator films in order. After Terminator 2, the series splits into competing continuities, and 2019's Dark Fate ignores films 3-5 to continue directly from T2.
- Movies
Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movies in Order
All 9 Texas Chainsaw Massacre films split across four incompatible timelines. Watch the 1974 original first, then pick a line: the original continuity, the Platinum Dunes remakes, the Texas Chainsaw 3D timeline, or the 2022 Netflix legacy sequel. Release order covers everything, and an optional 2023 game rounds out the franchise.
- TV

- Anime
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Watch Order

Release order works; nothing new exists since 2019.
- Movies
The Equalizer Movies in Order
The complete Denzel Washington Equalizer trilogy (2014-2023). Release and chronological order are identical, so just watch the three films in numbered sequence.
- Movies
The Exorcist Movies in Order

- Books
The Faraway Tree Books in Order
There are four Enid Blyton Faraway Tree books (1939-1951), four modern in-print continuations by other authors (2020-2023), and the 2026 film, nine entries in all. Read in publication order starting with The Enchanted Wood (1939), not The Magic Faraway Tree: the 2026 film borrows book two's title, which sends film viewers to the wrong starting point.
- Games

Release order handles all of it, and you can start at any of the three branches.
- Anime

Tokyo Mew Mew Watch Order
Tokyo Mew Mew spans 3 TV entries totaling 76 episodes: the original 52-episode series (2002-03) and the two-season reboot Tokyo Mew Mew New (2022-23, 24 episodes total). The reboot retells the manga from chapter one, so the real decision is a fork: pick the modern New branch or the filler-heavy classic, not both.
- Games
Tomb Raider Games in Order
The 12 released mainline Tomb Raider games (1996-2018) across three eras, plus the announced Legacy of Atlantis (2027) and Catalyst (2028), with the two remaster collections and the Definitive Edition listed alongside as editions rather than new games. The 2013 reboot is still the best place to start.
- Movies

Watch the TV series first; everything else is optional.
- Games
Trails Games in Order
The Trails saga is 13 mainline games across four arcs (15 steps here with the two Sky remakes listed on their own), all one continuous timeline in Zemuria: Sky (3), Crossbell (2), Erebonia (4 plus the Reverie bridge) and Calvard (3 so far). Japanese release order is the recommended path, with the 2025-2026 Sky remakes as the modern entry point.

- TV
Vampire Diaries Universe Watch Order
The Vampire Diaries universe is three shows and 17 seasons: The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017), The Originals (2013-2018) and Legacies (2018-2022). Watch them in premiere order; for the full interleaved timeline, The Originals branches off from TVD season 4.

The screen Oz canon is six films: The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Wiz (1978), Return to Oz (1985), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), and the two Wicked films (2024, 2025). Watch the 1939 classic first, then the Wicked pair; the catch is that the studios' Ozzes are legally separate worlds.
- Books
World of the White Rat Books in Order
There are 8 World of the White Rat books: the Clocktaur War duology (2017-2018), Swordheart (2018), the four Saint of Steel romances (2020-2023), and Daggerbound, the first direct numbered sequel, arriving August 25, 2026. - Games

- TV
Yellowstone & Prequels in Order
Taylor Sheridan's Dutton-family saga: the present-day flagship Yellowstone plus prequels 1883 and 1923. Watch Yellowstone first, then the prequels, or follow the timeline from 1883 onward.
- Games
Ys Games in Order
All 11 mainline Ys entries (the ten numbered games plus the prequel Ys Origin) across 15 steps, in release order and true chronological order, because Falcom's numbering was never a timeline: Ys X happens right after Ys II, Ys VIII happens before Ys VI, and Ys IX is the chronological finale.
- Anime

Yu-Gi-Oh! spans 16 entries: the 1998 Toei series (Season 0, a separate continuity), Duel Monsters (2000, 224 episodes) and its successor series GX, 5D's, Zexal (two entries, one story), Arc-V, VRAINS, Sevens and Go Rush!!, plus five movies. Nearly every series is a standalone door; the one hard rule is Sevens before Go Rush!!.
- Anime
Zatch Bell! Watch Order
Zatch Bell! spans 7 entries: the 33-volume manga (2001-2007), the 150-episode TV series (2003-2006), two theatrical films (101st Devil, 2004; Attack of Mechavulcan, 2005), two non-canon OVAs (00F, 2005; the Umagon rescue one-shot, 2006), and the ongoing sequel manga Zatch Bell! 2 (2022-).
