Why this order?

Start with the 1994 feature film, which sets up the gate, Abydos and Ra, then move to Stargate SG-1 (1997), the series that turned a one-off blockbuster into a decade of television. From there the franchise widens: Stargate Atlantis (2004) launches out of SG-1's universe and runs parallel to the mothership's final seasons, trading characters and the occasional plot thread, so alternate between them by airdate once Atlantis begins. Our episode lists carry the airdates, which makes the interleave self-evident.

When SG-1 ended on television, its two remaining stories arrived as direct-to-DVD movies: The Ark of Truth (2008) closes the Ori arc, and Continuum (2008) is a time-travel adventure that doubles as the SG-1 cast's send-off. Watch both right after SG-1's tenth season. Stargate Universe (2009) then takes the franchise darker and further from home, and stands mostly alone; its two seasons end on an unresolved cliffhanger, the franchise's great wound.

Stargate: Origins (2018) is a ten-part web prequel about young Catherine Langford in the 1930s. Chronology purists could start there, but it was made for existing fans and works best as a curiosity late in the run. One warning for 2026: the Amazon series announced in late 2025 was cancelled in June 2026 without airing, so do not wait for it; what exists above is the complete saga.

Frequently asked questions

How many Stargate shows and movies are there?

One theatrical film (1994), three live-action series (SG-1 with ten seasons, Atlantis with five, Universe with two), two direct-to-DVD movies (The Ark of Truth and Continuum, both 2008) and the ten-part web prequel Origins (2018): more than 350 episodes of television in all.

What order should I watch Stargate in?

Release order: the 1994 film, SG-1, Atlantis alongside SG-1's final seasons, the two DVD movies after SG-1 season 10, then Universe, with Origins as a late curiosity. Alternate SG-1 and Atlantis by airdate once Atlantis starts.

Do SG-1 and Atlantis overlap?

Yes: Atlantis premiered during SG-1's eighth season and the shows ran side by side for three years, sharing characters and threads. Watching by airdate keeps the handoffs in sequence; our episode lists carry the dates.

Do I need the 1994 movie first?

It is the best start: SG-1 picks up its premise, its gate and Daniel Jackson directly. The series re-explains enough that you could survive without it, but the film is two hours that make everything after richer.

Was Stargate Universe ever finished?

No: it was cancelled after two seasons in 2011 and ends on an unresolved cliffhanger, with the Destiny crew in stasis. No continuation has ever been made.

Is a new Stargate show coming?

Not currently: the Amazon series announced in late 2025 was cancelled in June 2026 before airing. Amazon has said it continues to explore the franchise, but as of mid-2026 nothing is in production.
