Alan Wake Games in Order

Why this order?

Alan Wake is short enough that the right order is simple: play it in release order, which also happens to be chronological. Start with Alan Wake (2010), Remedy's atmospheric thriller about a blocked novelist whose manuscript starts coming true in the Pacific Northwest town of Bright Falls. It sets up the central premise — the Dark Place, the power of writing, and the light-versus-darkness combat — that everything later builds on.

Next is Alan Wake's American Nightmare (2012), a standalone spin-off. It's leaner and more action-focused than the main games, framed as an episode of the in-universe TV show "Night Springs," but it still moves Wake's story forward and is worth playing before the sequel. You can technically skip it, but it deepens the lore and the recurring villain Mr. Scratch.

Then comes Alan Wake 2 (2023), the long-awaited survival-horror sequel that splits play between Wake and FBI agent Saga Anderson. This is where the series formally joins the Remedy Connected Universe: it crosses over with Control, the janitor Ahti appears in both games, and Alan Wake already featured in Control's AWE expansion. The detective character Alex Casey is also a knowing nod to Remedy's Max Payne.

The one gotcha: don't start with Alan Wake 2. It assumes you know the first game and rewards familiarity with Control. For the fullest experience, play the original, then American Nightmare, then Alan Wake 2 — and consider Control alongside it.
