Why this order?

Max Payne is one of the rare series where release order and story order are identical, so the decision is easy: play Max Payne (2001), then Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (2003), then Max Payne 3 (2012), in that exact sequence. Each game picks up years after the last in Max's life, and the narrative leans heavily on what came before, so there is no benefit to jumping around.

The first two games were made by Remedy Entertainment, the Finnish studio behind Alan Wake and Control. They are tight, comic-panel noir shooters built around bullet time, with writer Sam Lake both scripting the story and lending his face to the original Max. Max Payne 2 deepens the doomed romance and tragedy, and it is the natural emotional payoff to the first game.

Max Payne 3 is the odd one out. Remedy sold the rights, so Rockstar developed it nearly a decade later, relocating a broken, older Max to Brazil. The tone is grittier and the look is very different, but the writing still treats the first two games as canon, so playing them first matters more here than the studio change suggests.

One fun gotcha for newer players: in Remedy's Alan Wake 2, the detective Alex Casey is a deliberate nod to Max Payne, modeled on Sam Lake and voiced by James McCaffrey, Max's original voice actor. Remedy has also confirmed a remake of the first two games, so the cleanest entry point may soon change. Until then, start with the 2001 original and go in order.

Frequently asked questions

How many Max Payne games are there?

There are three Max Payne games: Max Payne (2001), Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (2003), and Max Payne 3 (2012).

What order should I play Max Payne in?

Play them in release order, which is also story order: Max Payne, then Max Payne 2, then Max Payne 3. Each game follows directly from the last.

Do I need to play the first two games before Max Payne 3?

It is strongly recommended. Max Payne 3 references the earlier games' events and characters, and they give weight to Max's broken state in the third game.

Who made the Max Payne games?

Remedy Entertainment created the first two (2001, 2003). Rockstar Games developed Max Payne 3 (2012) after acquiring the rights to the series.

Is there a Max Payne remake?

Yes. Remedy is developing a single remake of the first two games, Max Payne 1 and 2, published by Rockstar. It is still in development.

Is Max Payne connected to Alan Wake?

Loosely, as an in-joke. In Remedy's Alan Wake 2, detective Alex Casey is a nod to Max Payne, modeled on writer Sam Lake and voiced by Max's original actor James McCaffrey.
