Xenoblade Chronicles Games in Order: complete list

0 / 14 done

This order covers 8 of 14 entries, and intentionally skips the rest.

  1. The canonical way to play XC1 on Switch: full visual and QoL overhaul plus the exclusive Future Connected epilogue

  2. 10 to 15 hour epilogue starring Shulk and Melia, set one year after XC1 and included only in the Definitive Edition; spoils XC1's ending, optional but useful Melia context before XC3

  3. Second pillar; runs parallel to XC1 in another universe, a fact the game reveals late; finish it before touching Torna

  4. Standalone scale prequel expansion set 500 years before XC2, sold as Expansion Pass DLC and as its own physical release; assumes XC2's reveals, so always play it after XC2

  5. Trilogy closer set in Aionios, a world born from the merging fates of XC1's and XC2's worlds; readable standalone but its payoff assumes both earlier games

  6. Trilogy capstone available only via the XC3 Expansion Pass; chronologically a prequel to XC3 but functionally the series finale, play it absolutely last of the trilogy

  7. Switch remaster that adds four party members and a new epilogue resolving the 2015 cliffhanger and tying X toward the mainline series; the version this guide recommends

  8. Releases 2027 as a Switch 2 exclusive, no month announced yet; announced June 9, 2026 as a new beginning that drops the Chronicles name, with a new setting built around Anima and Vesselai warriors; its story link to the trilogy is unconfirmed

Why this order?

Xenoblade looks simple, three numbered games, until you learn that its two biggest expansions are prequels and that a strict chronological order would actively ruin the series. This guide deliberately does not print a chronological list. Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 run simultaneously in parallel universes, and the fact that they are parallel is itself a late game reveal, so a timeline ordering is both semi-impossible and inherently spoilery.

The two traps that break most lists are the expansions. Torna - The Golden Country is set roughly 500 years before Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but it was released after it and written assuming you know XC2's twists; playing it first spoils XC2's central reveals and guts Torna's own tragedy. Future Redeemed is even more extreme: chronologically a prequel to Xenoblade Chronicles 3, it is functionally the trilogy's true finale, dense with payoffs for all three games and even X. Play it dead last, after XC3's credits, never before 3 because it happens earlier.

Then there is the X question. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a separate universe sidegame about Earth refugees on planet Mira, with no story dependency on the trilogy, so it is genuinely playable at any point, even first. But the 2025 Definitive Edition added a brand new epilogue that finally resolves the 2015 cliffhanger and ties X toward the mainline series, and that epilogue lands hardest with the trilogy finished, which is why this guide slots it after Future Redeemed.

Version selection matters too. Never start on the Wii original, the New 3DS port or the Wii U version of X. Play Xenoblade Chronicles as the Definitive Edition, the only version containing the Future Connected epilogue, and X as its 2025 Definitive Edition. Switch 2 owners can take the 2026 Switch 2 Editions, cheap upgrade packs that are now the best versions of each game. Counting rule for the numbers above: Future Connected, the epilogue bundled inside XC1 Definitive Edition, counts as its own story entry, which is how six games become seven entries.

Frequently asked questions

How many Xenoblade games are there?

There are 7 core story entries: Xenoblade Chronicles, Future Connected, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Torna - The Golden Country, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Future Redeemed and Xenoblade Chronicles X. Counting rule: Future Connected, the epilogue bundled inside XC1 Definitive Edition, counts as its own entry. Across ports, the two Definitive Editions and the 2026 Switch 2 Editions that comes to roughly 15 releases, counting Future Connected as part of the Definitive Edition it ships in. An 8th story entry, Xenoblade Genesis, arrives in 2027.

Should I play Torna before Xenoblade Chronicles 2 since it is a prequel?

No. Torna - The Golden Country is set about 500 years before XC2, but it was released afterwards and written assuming you know XC2's reveals. Playing it first spoils XC2's biggest twists and blunts Torna's own tragedy. Play it immediately after finishing XC2.

When should I play Future Redeemed?

Absolutely last of the trilogy, after Xenoblade Chronicles 3's credits. It is chronologically a prequel to XC3's main story, but it is the trilogy's true finale, packed with payoffs spanning XC1, XC2, XC3 and even X. Filing it before XC3 by timeline logic is the single worst mistake a chronological list makes with this series. It requires the XC3 Expansion Pass and has no standalone release.

Do I need to play Xenoblade Chronicles X?

Not for the trilogy's story. X is a separate universe sidegame about Earth survivors on planet Mira and can be played at any point as a standalone, even first. But the 2025 Definitive Edition added a new epilogue that resolves the 2015 cliffhanger and ties X toward the mainline series, so this guide recommends it after the trilogy for maximum effect. The Wii U original lacks that epilogue entirely.

Which version of Xenoblade Chronicles 1 should I play?

The Definitive Edition (Switch, 2020) or its Switch 2 Edition (2026), the only versions containing the Future Connected epilogue. The Wii original and the New 3DS only Xenoblade Chronicles 3D are obsolete for new players.

Is there a chronological order for Xenoblade?

Deliberately not in this guide. XC1 and XC2 take place simultaneously in parallel universes, and that fact is itself a late game reveal, so a true chronological list is both semi-impossible and inherently spoilery. Add that Torna and Future Redeemed are prequels that spoil their base games when played first, and a chronological order actively harms first timers.

Do I need Xenogears or Xenosaga first?

No. They are Tetsuya Takahashi's earlier, narratively separate entries in the wider Xeno metaseries. Xenoblade only nods to them via cameos, such as KOS-MOS in XC2 and Xenosaga's Momo added as a Blade in XC2's Switch 2 Edition.

Are the Switch 2 Editions worth it and what do they add?

They are 4K up to 60fps upgrades with new content per game: XC1 DE adds the Ether Jet vehicle and Nopon Grand Prix (out now), XC2 adds the new Blade Momo with a quest, new Pyra and Mythra outfits and Merc Assault (digital out July 30, 2026, physical October 1), XC3 adds a new Hero, newly voiced scenes and a roguelike mode (December 3, 2026), and X DE's is out since February 19, 2026. Upgrade packs cost 9.99 USD for XC1, XC2 and XC3 or 4.99 USD for X DE if you own the Switch versions.

What is Xenoblade Genesis?

The next mainline game, announced at the June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct as a new beginning for the series, notably dropping the Chronicles name. It is a Switch 2 exclusive due in 2027 with no month announced, set in a new fantasy leaning world built around a force called Anima and warriors called Vesselai, developed by Monolith Soft. Its story relationship to the existing trilogy is not yet confirmed.
