The Witcher (Netflix) Watch Order
Netflix's live-action and animated Witcher canon, ordered two ways: by release date (the way it was designed to be watched) and by in-universe chronology. Covers all main seasons plus the animated films Nightmare of the Wolf and Sirens of the Deep, the live-action TV film The Rats, and the prequel Blood Origin.

Why this order?
Netflix's Witcher canon is bigger than the flagship show alone, and once you add the animated films, the live-action TV film, and the prequel series, the ordering question gets real. Release order is what we recommend for newcomers: Season 1 (2019), the animated film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (August 2021), Season 2 (December 2021), the prequel Blood Origin (2022), Season 3 (2023, split into two volumes), Sirens of the Deep (animated film, February 2025), The Rats: A Witcher Tale (live-action TV film, October 2025), and Season 4 (2025). This is the sequence the writers assumed you would follow, and the side stories were built to enrich the main plot rather than precede it. Season 5, confirmed as the final season, arrives in 2026.
The one thing every first-timer should know: Season 1 deliberately interweaves three separate timelines, following Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer years apart before their threads finally converge. It confuses a lot of viewers on a first pass, so watching in release order (and paying attention to who is aging and who is not) matters more here than in most shows. A pure chronological viewing does not fix that, because the scrambling happens inside a single season.
If you would rather watch in-universe time order, start with Blood Origin, set roughly 1,200 years before the main story and depicting the first prototype witcher and the Conjunction of the Spheres. Then Nightmare of the Wolf, Vesemir's origin generations before Geralt, then the main seasons. It is a fun lore tour, but it front-loads two spin-offs before you have met the leads, so we make release order the default.
This show is only one of three doors into the same world. We cover The Witcher games (CD Projekt Red's separate continuity) in the-witcher-games, and the source material in the-witcher-books, Andrzej Sapkowski's novels and short stories that started it all and go far deeper than any screen adaptation.

Frequently asked questions
What order should I watch The Witcher on Netflix?
For a first watch, follow release order: Season 1, Nightmare of the Wolf, Season 2, Blood Origin, Season 3, then Season 4. The spin-off film and prequel were made to enrich the main story, not to be watched before it.
Do I need to watch Blood Origin and Nightmare of the Wolf?
No, both are optional side stories. Nightmare of the Wolf is an animated film about Vesemir's origin, and Blood Origin is a prequel set roughly 1,200 years earlier. They add lore but are not required to follow the main seasons.
Why is Season 1 so confusing?
Season 1 deliberately interweaves three separate timelines following Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer years apart before their stories converge. Watching closely and noting who is and is not aging helps it click.
Why did Geralt change actors in Season 4?
Henry Cavill left the series after Season 3, and Liam Hemsworth took over as Geralt of Rivia starting in Season 4, which premiered on October 30, 2025.
Is there a Season 5, and is it the last one?
Yes. Season 5 is confirmed as the final season and is due in 2026. It was shot back-to-back with Season 4, and filming wrapped in October 2025.
Is the Netflix show the same story as the games and books?
They share the same world but are separate continuities. The books by Andrzej Sapkowski came first, the CD Projekt Red games are their own sequel canon, and the Netflix series is a distinct adaptation. See our the-witcher-books and the-witcher-games guides.
