Why this order?

Diablo is a game franchise first, so the books were never written in story order. They jump around Sanctuary's history depending on which game Blizzard wanted to support at the time, which is exactly why "what order do I read the Diablo books in" has two very different answers. Publication order tracks the games: the early novels (Legacy of Blood, The Black Road, The Kingdom of Shadow) shipped around Diablo II, then Richard A. Knaak's Sin War trilogy arrived in 2006 and 2007, and later titles like The Order and Storm of Light followed Diablo III. In-world chronology flips much of that on its head.
