Why this order?

Insomniac Games' Spider-Man series is one of the rare cases where you do not need to overthink the order: release order and story order are the same thing. Start with Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), continue with the standalone Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020), and finish with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023). Each game picks up after the last, and characters, relationships, and consequences carry forward, so playing them in sequence is by far the most rewarding way through.

We list a single Release order here because it doubles as the chronological story order. The first game establishes Peter Parker eight years into his career, his bond with Mary Jane, and his mentor-turned-villain Otto Octavius. Miles Morales is set during the following winter and centers on Miles stepping up while Peter is away, so it sits squarely between the two mainline entries. Spider-Man 2 then brings both Peters and Miles together against Kraven the Hunter and the symbiote, paying off threads from both earlier games.

The one gotcha worth flagging: these are Insomniac's PlayStation games and are entirely separate from the films. If you came here looking for the movies, the live-action and animated Spider-Man films (including the Spider-Verse series) are covered on our Spider-Man movies page instead. The games share Marvel characters with those films but tell their own self-contained continuity.

A couple of practical notes. Miles Morales is shorter and sometimes mistaken for DLC, but it is a full standalone game and an essential bridge, not an optional side story. If you skip it, Spider-Man 2 still works, but several emotional beats land harder when you have played it. Stick to release order and you will experience the trilogy exactly as intended.

Frequently asked questions

How many Marvel's Spider-Man games are there?

There are three games in Insomniac's PlayStation Spider-Man series: Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020), and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023).

What order should I play the Marvel's Spider-Man games in?

Play in release order, which is also the story order: Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), then Miles Morales (2020), then Spider-Man 2 (2023). Each game continues directly from the last.

Is Miles Morales a full game or DLC?

It is a full standalone game, not DLC. It is shorter than the mainline entries but is an essential story bridge set between the first game and Spider-Man 2.

Do I need to play the first games before Spider-Man 2?

You can follow Spider-Man 2 on its own, but it pays off characters and relationships from both earlier games. Playing all three in order gives the full emotional payoff.

Are these games connected to the Spider-Man movies?

No. These are Insomniac's original PlayStation games with their own continuity, separate from the live-action and animated films. See our Spider-Man movies page for the films.

Can I play Marvel's Spider-Man on PC?

Yes. All three games have been released on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, in addition to PlayStation consoles.
