Why this order?
Most "what order do I play the Marvel games" questions have a surprising answer: outside Insomniac's Spider-Man corner, there is really only one Marvel game series with a genuine play order, and that is the Marvel Ultimate Alliance trilogy. Everything else is a self-contained standalone. So this page does two jobs. First, it puts the Ultimate Alliance games in order. Second, it points you at the big modern Marvel games worth playing even though they do not connect to each other.
The Ultimate Alliance spine runs Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (2006), Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (2009), and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order (2019). These are four-hero action-RPG romps with huge rosters. Here is the honest catch, though: the games do not tell one continuing story. The first pits your team against Doctor Doom and the Masters of Evil, the second adapts the Secret War and Civil War comic arcs, and the third is an all-new tale about stopping Thanos and the Black Order that openly disregards the continuity of the first two. So while there is a clear numbered order, you can jump in anywhere. We still recommend playing them 1, 2, 3 because the roster, systems, and scale grow across the trilogy, and the third is the modern showpiece.
Around that spine sit three excellent modern standalones. Marvel's Avengers (2020) was a live-service co-op game that shut down and was delisted in September 2023, so it is now hard to buy. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (2021) is a single-player, single-ending narrative adventure. Marvel's Midnight Suns (2022) is a tactical, card-based team builder starring a custom hero, The Hunter. None of the three requires the others, which is why release order doubles as the recommended order for them.

It is a purely single-player narrative adventure from Eidos-Montreal. You control Star-Lord and lead the team, and while dialogue choices change some moments, the game has one overall story and one ending, with no multiplayer, downloadable content, or microtransactions.
Is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 exclusive to Nintendo Switch?
Yes. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, developed by Team Ninja and published by Nintendo, launched on July 19, 2019, only for the Nintendo Switch and has not been released on any other platform.
