Fire Emblem Games in Order: complete list

0 / 21 done

This order covers 15 of 21 entries, and intentionally skips the rest.

  1. Standalone Fodlan epic with four routes (three houses plus Silver Snow); the series' best seller, the most common recommended entry point, and now the anchor of its only cross-game modern continuity

  2. Out September 17, 2026 as a Switch 2 exclusive: four lead characters (Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda) enter the Heroic Games tournament in the Dagdan Empire. Officially the same world as Three Houses in a different, unconfirmed era, so Three Houses enriches it but is not required

  3. DS remake of the 1990 original and the recommended English way to play the Archanea origin story; long out of print, so it takes a secondhand cart

  4. 3DS remake of Gaiden and always the version to play; Valentia's story runs parallel to Marth's generation, so it slots between Shadow Dragon and Awakening. Physical only since the eShop closure

  5. DS remake of Mystery of the Emblem's Book 2 (with the former Satellaview side chapters), yet itself Japan-only, leaving Marth's second war with no official English version; an unofficial fan translation exists

  6. 3DS soft sequel set millennia after the Archanea saga (Tiki, the Falchion, and the Hero-King Marth legend return) and the series' modern on-ramp; fully playable first. Physical only since the 3DS eShop closed in March 2023

  7. 3DS story told across three routes, with Birthright and Conquest as separate versions and Revelation as DLC, in that internal order; a standalone world with light Awakening winks

    • DLC Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation 2016 Third route sold only as DLC and delisted before the eShop closed, so it is legally unpurchasable today; the physical Special Edition cartridge is the only complete copy of all three routes
  8. Japan-only Super Famicom epic spanning two generations; the start of the Jugdral cluster and the series' most requested remake, which remains unannounced

  9. Japan-only midquel set inside Genealogy's timeline (Leif's campaign between its two generations), so play it after Genealogy; famously the hardest game in the series

  10. Prequel to The Binding Blade starring Roy's and Lilina's parents, sold in the West simply as Fire Emblem; the first localized entry and a built-in newcomer tutorial. On Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack since June 2023

  11. Roy's GBA game, still Japan-only with no official English release; chronologically second in the Elibe cluster despite releasing first, because The Blazing Blade is its prequel

  12. Fully standalone GBA entry set on Magvel with a mid-game route split (Eirika and Ephraim, both canon halves of one story); slots anywhere. On Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack since April 2025

  13. Ike's GameCube debut and the hard prerequisite for Radiant Dawn; added to the Nintendo Classics GameCube library on Switch 2 in January 2026, its first re-release ever

  14. Direct Wii continuation that requires Path of Radiance (returning cast, unresolved plot, originally a save transfer); never re-released, so an expensive secondhand disc is the only route

  15. Standalone anniversary game set on Elyos whose Emblem Rings summon twelve past protagonists (Marth, Sigurd, Ike, Byleth, and more) as fan-service cameos; no prerequisites, but it lands best as a late stop

Why this order?

Fire Emblem is not one story. It is seventeen mainline games spread across seven separate continuities that share mechanics, dragons, and a habit of naming swords, which is why flat release order is genuinely bad advice here. The good news is that the modern standalones are designed as entry points. Start with Three Houses (the best seller and the most common recommendation), Awakening (the game that famously saved the series), or Engage (mechanically superb, story-light): all three require zero prior knowledge. Once you are hooked, play by continuity cluster rather than by year.

The Archanea and Valentia cluster is Marth's saga. Play Shadow Dragon, the 2008 DS remake that is the modern way to play the 1990 Famicom original, then Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, the 2017 remake of Gaiden whose story runs parallel to Marth's wars rather than after them. Then comes the series' strangest gap: Marth's second war, Mystery of the Emblem Book 2, has no official English version in any form, and neither does its Japan-only DS remake New Mystery of the Emblem, so English players read a plot summary and jump ahead to Awakening, the distant-future soft sequel set millennia later. Jugdral means Genealogy of the Holy War then Thracia 776, a midquel set inside Genealogy's timeline; both remain Japan-only. Elibe is the classic release-order trap: The Binding Blade (2002) is chronologically second, because The Blazing Blade (2003), sold in the West as plain Fire Emblem, is its prequel and the intended way in. Tellius carries the series' only hard dependency: Radiant Dawn directly continues Path of Radiance and should never come first.

The standalones slot anywhere. Sacred Stones is a self-contained GBA story, Fates is its own world with the internal route order Birthright, then Conquest, then Revelation, and Three Houses and Engage need nothing at all. Fortune's Weave (September 17, 2026, Switch 2) turns Fodlan into the series' first cross-game modern continuity: Nintendo confirms it shares Three Houses' world but in a different era, and its exact timeline placement is unconfirmed, so treat Three Houses as enrichment rather than homework.

Availability is the other half of this guide. The 1990 original's official English Switch release was delisted in March 2021, the 3DS eShop closure in 2023 made Awakening, Fates, and Echoes physical only and left Fates' Revelation route legally unpurchasable, Radiant Dawn has never been re-released, and Path of Radiance only reached the Nintendo Classics GameCube library on Switch 2 in January 2026, its first re-release ever. Six games have never left Japan. Spinoffs like Heroes, both Warriors games, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE are never prerequisites; we cover them where they matter and skip them where they do not.

Frequently asked questions

How many Fire Emblem games are there?

There are 17 mainline Fire Emblem games released between 1990 and 2023, counting the three remakes (Shadow Dragon, New Mystery of the Emblem, and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia) as official entries, and Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave becomes the 18th on September 17, 2026. Six of the seventeen never received any official English release, and the 1990 original's English Switch version was a limited-time product delisted in March 2021. Around the mainline sit the spinoffs: Fire Emblem Heroes, Fire Emblem Warriors, Warriors: Three Hopes, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, and Fire Emblem Shadows.

What order should I play the Fire Emblem games in?

Start with a modern standalone: Three Houses, Awakening, or Engage, none of which needs prior knowledge. After that, play by continuity cluster rather than release year: Shadow Dragon (DS) then Echoes then Awakening for the Archanea and Valentia saga, Genealogy of the Holy War then Thracia 776 for Jugdral, The Blazing Blade then The Binding Blade for Elibe, Path of Radiance then Radiant Dawn for Tellius, and Sacred Stones or Fates anywhere. Within Fates the internal order is Birthright, Conquest, then Revelation.

Do I need to play Path of Radiance before Radiant Dawn?

Yes. Radiant Dawn is the series' only hard prerequisite: it directly continues Path of Radiance with the same cast and unresolved plot, and originally read your GameCube save. Radiant Dawn has never been re-released and no re-release has been announced, so it still requires a Wii disc, and note that the January 2026 Nintendo Classics version of Path of Radiance on Switch 2 cannot perform the original save transfer into it.

Do I need to play Three Houses before Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave?

No. Nintendo has confirmed Fortune's Weave is set in the same world as Three Houses but in a different era, and its exact placement on the timeline (before or after Three Houses) has not been officially confirmed. Three Houses is recommended context that will enrich the new game, not required homework, so newcomers can start with Fortune's Weave on September 17, 2026.

Is there a Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War remake?

No. A remake has been rumored since a 2022 leak, but as of July 2026 there is no official announcement of any kind, so any circulating release date is fabricated. Genealogy remains Japan-only on the Super Famicom, which is exactly why it tops most remake wishlists.

Are Fire Emblem Heroes and Fire Emblem Shadows part of the main series?

No. Heroes (2017) is a free-to-start mobile gacha crossover with an original framing story now spanning Books I through X; it is still live as of mid-2026 but it is a character buffet, not a mainline entry or an entry point. Fire Emblem Shadows, a mobile social-deduction spinoff shadow-dropped on September 24, 2025, was poorly received (Metacritic 37) and has no continuity relevance; both are footnotes for a story-focused playthrough.

Is TearRing Saga a Fire Emblem game?

No. TearRing Saga on the PlayStation is a spiritual successor made by series creator Shouzou Kaga after he left Nintendo, and its similarities triggered a Nintendo lawsuit. It connects to no Fire Emblem continuity and does not belong in any Fire Emblem play order.
