Why this order?

Patlabor is the rare franchise where the naive advice, just watch the famous movies, is actively wrong. There are three mutually incompatible continuities, all launched almost simultaneously in 1988-89 as a deliberate rights decision by the Headgear creator collective: Masami Yuki's manga (its own telling, not the anime's source), the movie branch (Early Days OVA into the two celebrated Mamoru Oshii films), and the TV branch (the 47-episode series plus The New Files OVA), which retells the story from scratch with the same cast.

The reason this matters in 2026: Patlabor EZY, the first new Patlabor animation in a decade, continues the TV branch. The official site confirms the line is TV Series, then The New Files, then EZY, set in 2033 as Labors go obsolete under AI automation. So the real EZY prep is 47 TV episodes plus 16 OVA episodes, and the Oshii films prepare you for the wrong universe. EZY is also built for newcomers, with an all-new cast led by Towa Kuga, so starting cold at EZY is a legitimate third path.

The movie branch has its own trap: WXIII, billed as Patlabor the Movie 3, released in 2002 but is set roughly a year after the 1989 film, so its story slot is between films 1 and 2. Watch Early Days, Movie 1, WXIII, then Patlabor 2, with the Minipato comedy shorts slotted anywhere after you know the cast. The Japan-only live-action Next Generation series and its film Shuto Kessen are direct sequels to Patlabor 2, not the TV series.
