Attack on Titan Watch Order

#3 in Best Anime #3 in Best Shonen Anime #5 in Best Franchises

Attack on Titan tells one continuous story, so the watch order is simply the release order. The only tricky part is the Final Season, which was split into Part 1, Part 2, and The Final Chapters.

Why this order?

Attack on Titan is one of the rare big anime where you do not need a guide to navigate timelines or branching arcs. The story is strictly linear: it picks up the morning Eren's hometown falls and runs in an unbroken chain to the final confrontation years later. Because of that, the watch order and the release order are identical. Start at Season 1 and move straight through to the end. There is no spin-off prequel to slot in and no chronological reshuffle to worry about, so the order below is the only order that makes sense. The genuine point of confusion is the ending. The series did not wrap up in a clean "Season 5." Instead, the studio MAPPA released the conclusion as a drawn-out Final Season delivered in three chunks: The Final Season Part 1 (2020), The Final Season Part 2 (2022), and finally The Final Season: The Final Chapters (2023), a pair of feature-length special episodes that close the story. Treat all three as one continuous stretch of episodes that simply aired across different years. Watch them back to back, in that sequence, and the ending plays as intended. A couple of housekeeping notes. Seasons 3 and the Final Season are themselves split into "Part 1" and "Part 2," but those are just mid-season breaks, not separate stories, so keep going in order. We have deliberately left compilation and recap movies off this list. They re-edit footage you have already watched and add nothing new to the plot, so they only pad out the runtime for newcomers. If you finish and want more in the same brutal, high-stakes register, fans often jump to Demon Slayer, Vinland Saga, or the original Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. None are connected to Attack on Titan, but they scratch a similar itch.

Frequently asked questions

What order should I watch Attack on Titan in?

Watch it in release order, which matches the story order: Season 1, Season 2, Season 3 (Parts 1 and 2), then The Final Season Part 1, Part 2, and The Final Chapters.

How many seasons and episodes are there?

There are four seasons totaling roughly 89 episodes. The Final Season was released in three installments: Part 1, Part 2, and The Final Chapters specials that conclude the series.

Why is the Final Season split into three parts?

MAPPA released the conclusion in stages across 2020, 2022, and 2023. Part 1, Part 2, and the feature-length Final Chapters are one continuous story aired at different times.

Do I need to watch the recap or compilation movies?

No. The compilation movies re-edit existing episodes and add no new story, so you can safely skip them and watch the TV seasons instead.

Is Attack on Titan finished?

Yes. The anime concluded with The Final Season: The Final Chapters in November 2023, fully adapting the manga's ending.

Does watch order differ from chronological order?

No. Attack on Titan is a linear story with no prequels or flash-forwards that require reordering, so release order is the chronological order.
