Why this order?

Deus Ex is a landmark immersive-sim series built on choice: hack, sneak, talk, or shoot your way through a near-future of conspiracies, augmentations, and competing factions. There are only four mainline games, which makes the "correct" order an easy question with two clean answers depending on what you want.

Release order is the default we recommend for first-timers. The original Deus Ex (2000) and its sequel Invisible War (2003) follow nano-augmented agent JC Denton. Years later, Eidos-Montreal rebooted the franchise as a prequel duology starring mechanically augmented Adam Jensen: Human Revolution (2011) and Mankind Divided (2016). Playing in release order lets you experience the series as it was made, and the older games' rougher edges read better when you go in chronologically by release date rather than after the slicker modern entries.

Chronological order is the gotcha. Because Human Revolution and Mankind Divided are prequels set roughly 25 years before the original, the story timeline runs Human Revolution to Mankind Divided to Deus Ex to Invisible War. Story-first players who want events in narrative sequence should start with Jensen's era and finish with Denton's. Either path works; the games are largely self-contained, with the two Jensen titles forming the tightest connected arc.

Unlike Eidos-Montreal's other revival, Thief, Deus Ex has no crossover universe, and it is unrelated to Square Enix's Marvel games or Remedy's Connected Universe of Alan Wake and Control. It stands alone as one of the defining immersive sims, sharing DNA with System Shock and Dishonored rather than any shared canon. As of early 2026 no fifth mainline game has shipped, so these four are the complete series.

Frequently asked questions

How many Deus Ex games are there?

There are four mainline Deus Ex games: Deus Ex (2000), Invisible War (2003), Human Revolution (2011), and Mankind Divided (2016). Spin-offs like The Fall exist but are not part of the core series.

What order should I play Deus Ex in?

For first-timers we recommend release order: Deus Ex, Invisible War, Human Revolution, then Mankind Divided. If you prefer the story timeline, play the Adam Jensen prequels first.

What is the chronological timeline order?

By in-story timeline it runs Human Revolution, then Mankind Divided, then the original Deus Ex, then Invisible War. The Jensen prequels are set roughly 25 years before the originals.

Do I need to play the older games first?

No. Each game is largely self-contained. Human Revolution and Mankind Divided form a tight pair, but you can start with either Jensen's era or the original without missing essential context.

Which Deus Ex game should I start with?

Human Revolution (2011) is the most beginner-friendly entry thanks to modern controls and pacing. Purists may prefer to start with the original 2000 Deus Ex.

Is there a new Deus Ex game coming?

As of early 2026, no fifth mainline Deus Ex has been released or formally announced. Mankind Divided (2016) remains the most recent game in the series.
