Why this order?
Call of Duty ships a new game almost every year, but the campaigns that actually connect to one another live in two big sub-series: Modern Warfare and Black Ops. This page follows those narrative threads rather than cataloguing every annual release, so you can play the stories that build on each other instead of bouncing between unrelated standalone entries.
The single biggest source of confusion is that the Modern Warfare name was used twice. The original trilogy, comprising Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Modern Warfare 3 (2011), tells one complete story about Captain Price, Soap and the hunt for the terrorist Makarov. Then in 2019 the series rebooted the brand from scratch: Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II (2022) and Modern Warfare III (2023) reuse the names and many of the characters but unfold in a separate, modernized continuity. They are not remakes you play in sequence with the originals, which is why each carries its own entry and a clarifying qualifier.
Release order is our default because these games were built to be experienced as they shipped, and the reboot deliberately echoes the originals years later. Within that timeline, treat the original Modern Warfare trilogy as one block, the reboot trilogy as another, and Black Ops as a third connected sub-series running from Black Ops (2010) through Black Ops II and III, Cold War, Black Ops 6 (2024) and Black Ops 7 (2025).
Black Ops stands largely apart, weaving Cold War espionage and the tangled loyalties of Mason, Woods and Menendez across decades. Beyond these two pillars sit plenty of standalone entries: World at War, WWII, Ghosts, Infinite Warfare, Vanguard and others. None are required to follow either main arc. If you only want the stories that matter, pick one sub-series and play it straight through.

Frequently asked questions
How many Call of Duty games are there?
There are more than twenty mainline Call of Duty games since 2003, with a new entry released almost every year. This page focuses on the major story games across the two big sub-series, Modern Warfare and Black Ops, rather than listing every annual release.
What order should I play Call of Duty in?
Since Call of Duty is a game series, 'watch' usually means play. The simplest path is release order. If you only want a connected story, play one sub-series start to finish: the original Modern Warfare trilogy (2007-2011), the Modern Warfare reboot trilogy (2019-2023), or the Black Ops games.
Is Modern Warfare (2019) a remake of Modern Warfare (2007)?
No. The 2019 Modern Warfare reboots the brand with a brand-new story and continuity. It reuses character names like Price and Soap but is not a remake you play alongside the 2007 original. The two trilogies are separate stories that happen to share titles.
What is the difference between Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare II?
Modern Warfare 2 (2009) is the middle game of the original trilogy. Modern Warfare II (2022), spelled with a roman numeral, is the middle game of the 2019 reboot trilogy. Different stories, different years, same recycled name.
Do I need to play the Black Ops games in order?
For the strongest story, yes. Black Ops (2010), Black Ops II (2012) and Black Ops Cold War (2020) are tightly connected through characters like Mason, Woods and Menendez. Black Ops III and Black Ops 6 are more loosely tied but still part of the sub-series.
Where do games like WWII, Ghosts and Vanguard fit?
They are standalone entries outside the two main sub-series. Titles such as Call of Duty: WWII, Ghosts, Infinite Warfare and Vanguard have their own self-contained campaigns and are not required to follow either the Modern Warfare or Black Ops storylines.
