Why this order?
Foundation is the rare classic where the "right" reading order is a genuine, decades-old argument, and both sides have a point. The series began as the original trilogy of fix-up novels stitched from 1940s magazine stories, then went dormant for nearly thirty years before Asimov returned to it with two sequels and two prequels. Because the prequels were written last but happen first, the publication timeline and the in-universe timeline pull in opposite directions.
Publication order is our default, and it is the order most longtime fans recommend for first-time readers. You start with Foundation (1951), Foundation and Empire (1952), and Second Foundation (1953), experiencing the sweep of the collapsing Galactic Empire exactly as Asimov's audience first did. The two sequels, Foundation's Edge (1982) and Foundation and Earth (1986), extend the story forward, and only then do the prequels Prelude to Foundation (1988) and Forward the Foundation (1993) fill in the life of psychohistorian Hari Seldon. Preserving this order keeps the original trilogy's mysteries and reveals intact.
Chronological (recommended-alternate) order instead opens with the two Seldon prequels, then proceeds through the trilogy and the sequels. This reads as a continuous biography of the galaxy, which some newcomers prefer, though it front-loads Asimov's weaker later prose and spoils a few surprises.
One more wrinkle: late in life Asimov wove Foundation together with his Robot novels (The Caves of Steel onward) and his Empire novels, creating a grand unified future history. A completist in-universe order would begin there. For most readers, though, the seven core Foundation books are the saga, and publication order is the cleanest way in.

Frequently asked questions
How many Foundation books are there?
There are seven core Foundation novels by Isaac Asimov: the original trilogy (1951-1953), two sequels (1982, 1986), and two prequels (1988, 1993). Asimov later linked these to his Robot and Empire novels for a larger shared future history.
What order should I read Foundation in?
For a first read, most fans recommend publication order, starting with Foundation (1951) and ending with the prequels. If you prefer a continuous in-universe timeline, read chronological order, which opens with Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation.
Should I read the prequels first?
Only if you want the story as a strict timeline. Reading Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation first spoils a few trilogy surprises and front-loads Asimov's later, weaker prose, so most readers save them for last.
Do I need to read Asimov's Robot novels first?
No. The seven Foundation books stand on their own. Asimov did connect them to his Robot and Empire novels, so completists sometimes read those first, but it is optional and not required to enjoy Foundation.
Is the Apple TV+ Foundation series a faithful adaptation?
No. The Apple TV+ series is a loose adaptation that invents new characters and storylines while keeping core ideas like Hari Seldon and psychohistory. Reading the books does not require watching the show, or vice versa.
Where does the Mule fit in the reading order?
The Mule, the saga's most famous antagonist, appears in Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation. In both publication and chronological order he arrives after the events of the first novel, midway through the core story.
