Why this order?
Jesse Stone is a run of nine TV movies starring Tom Selleck as a burned-out Los Angeles detective who takes the job of police chief in Paradise, Massachusetts. They aired between 2005 and 2015, the first eight on CBS and the ninth on the Hallmark Channel, and release order is the default here because it is the order the films were written, paced and cast to be watched in. Robert Harmon directed eight of the nine, which is a big part of why the run feels so consistent; Innocents Lost is the only one he did not direct.
Release order and story order part company at exactly one point. Film 2, Jesse Stone: Night Passage, is the origin story: Jesse loses his LAPD job, drives east and gets hired in Paradise, so its events happen before those of film 1, Stone Cold. That is the entire trap, and it is worth saying plainly that films 3 through 9 are unaffected. A strict chronological watch is simply Night Passage, then Stone Cold, then release order for the remaining seven. Release order is still the better default. Stone Cold was built as a self-contained pilot that introduces Jesse's voice, his dog, his ex-wife and his drinking without spoiling the Night Passage mystery, and Night Passage was made a year later as a deliberate look back, so leading with it turns the first film into a flashback that repeats setup you have already had.
From film 5 onward the series stops being episodic. Jesse is shot in Thin Ice, opens No Remorse already suspended, is out of the chief's job in Innocents Lost, and comes back as interim chief in Benefit of the Doubt before Lost in Paradise closes things out. Those five are strongly serialized, so do not shuffle the back half no matter which of the first two films you start with.
The novels are a separate track and the bigger source of confusion. Robert B. Parker wrote nine Jesse Stone books, and only four were ever filmed, out of publication order: Stone Cold adapts book 4, Night Passage adapts book 1, Death in Paradise adapts book 3, and Sea Change adapts book 5. Trouble in Paradise, book 2, was skipped entirely, and High Profile, Stranger in Paradise, Night and Day and Split Image were never filmed either. Films 5 through 9 adapt no novel at all; they are original stories credited only to characters created by Robert B. Parker. After Parker died in 2010 the books continued under Michael Brandman, then Reed Farrel Coleman, then Mike Lupica and now Christopher Farnsworth, reaching 23 titles by 2026. Not one continuation novel has been filmed, so a reading list will never line up with this watch list.
Finally, ignore the tenth film. Titles like Jesse Stone: The Last Call and Jesse Stone: The Last Watch have been circulating with invented casts and 2026 dates, and the claim has laundered its way into mainstream lifestyle coverage and AI search summaries. It all traces back to an undated IMDb stub page with no title, network or date attached. Selleck has said he would like to return, but nothing has been ordered.

Frequently asked questions
How many Jesse Stone movies are there?
There are nine Jesse Stone movies, all starring Tom Selleck. Eight aired on CBS between 2005 and 2012 and the ninth, Lost in Paradise, premiered on the Hallmark Channel in October 2015. No tenth film has been ordered as of mid-2026.
What order should I watch the Jesse Stone movies in?
Release order: Stone Cold, Night Passage, Death in Paradise, Sea Change, Thin Ice, No Remorse, Innocents Lost, Benefit of the Doubt, Lost in Paradise. It is the order the films were made for, and it only diverges from story order in one place, at film 2.
Is Night Passage really the first Jesse Stone story?
Yes. Night Passage aired second but is the origin story, covering Jesse leaving the LAPD and being hired as chief of Paradise, so its events come before Stone Cold. If you want the biography clean, watch Night Passage, then Stone Cold, then continue in release order. Films 3 through 9 need no reordering at all.
Which Jesse Stone books do the movies adapt?
Only four of them, and out of order. Stone Cold adapts Robert B. Parker's fourth novel, Night Passage his first, Death in Paradise his third and Sea Change his fifth. Trouble in Paradise, the second novel, was never filmed, and neither were High Profile, Stranger in Paradise, Night and Day or Split Image. Films 5 through 9 adapt no novel; they are original stories by Tom Selleck and Michael Brandman, credited to characters created by Robert B. Parker. The books have kept going without the films: after Parker died in 2010 the series passed to Michael Brandman, then Reed Farrel Coleman, then Mike Lupica and now Christopher Farnsworth, reaching 23 novels with Big Shot in February 2026, with book 24, Lockdown, listed by the publisher for February 9, 2027. None of those continuation novels has been filmed.
Is there a new Jesse Stone movie coming in 2026?
No. Titles like Jesse Stone: The Last Call and Jesse Stone: The Last Watch are not real films, and the casts attached to them are invented. The claim has been repeated by lifestyle sites and by AI search summaries that state a Hallmark greenlight as fact, but every version traces back to a single undated IMDb placeholder page with no title, network or release date. Hallmark's announced 2026 lineup, published in May 2026, contains no Jesse Stone movie. Tom Selleck has said he would like to make another one and that he may have to write it himself, but nothing has been ordered, scheduled or titled.
Do I need to read the Jesse Stone novels first?
No. The films stand entirely on their own, and reading first can work against you, since the four adapted films take the novels out of publication order and the other five are original stories. If you want the books too, read them separately in publication order starting with Night Passage from 1997.
Can I watch the later Jesse Stone movies out of order?
Not really. From Thin Ice onward the films are strongly serialized: Jesse is shot, then suspended, then out of the job, then reinstated as interim chief. Those last five carry one continuous arc, so keep them in order even if you flip the first two.
