Why this order?
The After films are the rare franchise with nothing to untangle: release order is story order. The five movies came out between 2019 and 2023, each one picks up roughly where the last stopped, and there is no prequel film, no flashback installment and no anthology entry, so a chronological watch and a release watch produce the same list. Start with After (2019) and work forward. After We Fell even ends on a to be continued card, which tells you how tightly the back half is chained together.
The one structural trap sits at the end. After Ever Happy (2022) adapts the fourth novel but stops at Hardin's book signing and withholds the happy ending the book saves for its epilogue. That material was moved into After Everything (2023), which is not adapted from anything at all: Castille Landon wrote it as an original screenplay that sends Hardin to Lisbon to face an ex before the story finally lands. If you quit after film four because it looks like the finale, you end on an unresolved break-up instead of the ending readers know. Watch all five.
The books are a separate track. Anna Todd wrote After on her phone as One Direction fanfiction, posting it chapter by chapter on Wattpad from 2013 with Harry Styles as the male lead, renamed Hardin Scott for publication. Read the novels in publication order: After (2014), After We Collided (2014), After We Fell (2014), After Ever Happy (2015), then Before (2015). Before is billed as a prequel, but it also contains scenes set after the finale, so it spoils the series in both directions and is not a safe entry point. The Landon spin-offs Nothing More (2016) and Nothing Less (2016) are optional, and neither they nor Before has ever been filmed.
Expect the screen version to be softer than the page. After (2019) is the only PG-13 entry and the four sequels are rated R, yet even so Hardin's verbal cruelty is trimmed, Tessa's mother is less antagonistic, Molly and Zed shrink, and Tristan is gender-swapped. One last thing that makes viewers think they missed a movie: films three and four were shot back-to-back in Bulgaria and recast five supporting roles at once, so Landon, Carol, Christian, Kimberly and Karen all change faces between film two and film three. Ken and Karen had already been swapped once before that, between films one and two. Only Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin hold their parts across all five.
