Avatar Movies in Order
James Cameron's Avatar saga is one continuous story set on Pandora, so release order and story order match. Three films are out, starting with 2009's Avatar and most recently 2025's Fire and Ash.

Why this order?
The good news for Avatar is that there is no puzzle to solve. James Cameron has built the saga as a single, forward-moving story that follows Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their family across the moon Pandora, so the order the films were released in is also the order events happen in. Whether the toggle says "release order" or "story order," you end up watching the same three movies back to back.
Release order is the default here and the one we recommend: Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025). Each film picks up years after the last, and emotional beats carry directly between them. The Way of Water introduces the Sully children and the reef-dwelling Metkayina clan, and Fire and Ash deals with the fallout of that film's losses while introducing the aggressive, fire-worshipping Ash People. Skipping around would spoil major deaths and rob later scenes of their weight.
The chronological (story) order option exists mainly to confirm there is no hidden reshuffle, no flashback prequel, and no machete-style alternate path of the kind fans debate for Star Wars. The two orders are identical, which is rare and genuinely convenient.
One important clarification: this page covers James Cameron's live-action, sci-fi Avatar films set on Pandora. It is not Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Nickelodeon animated series and its spin-offs, which live on a completely separate page. The two share a name and nothing else. With two more sequels (2029 and 2031) already scheduled, this list will keep growing, but the watch order should stay refreshingly simple.

Frequently asked questions
How many Avatar movies are there?
There are three Avatar films so far: Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025). James Cameron has two more planned, currently dated for 2029 and 2031.
What order should I watch the Avatar movies in?
Watch them in release order, which is also story order: Avatar (2009), then The Way of Water (2022), then Fire and Ash (2025). The saga is one continuous timeline, so there is no alternate viewing order.
Is Avatar the same as Avatar: The Last Airbender?
No. This page covers James Cameron's live-action sci-fi films set on Pandora. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a separate Nickelodeon animated franchise that only shares the name.
Do I need to watch Avatar before Fire and Ash?
Yes. Fire and Ash is the third chapter and directly follows events and character deaths from The Way of Water. Watching the first two films first is strongly recommended.
Is Avatar: Fire and Ash out yet?
Yes. Avatar: Fire and Ash released in theaters on December 19, 2025, as the third film in the planned five-movie saga.
Will there be more Avatar movies after Fire and Ash?
Yes. James Cameron has two more sequels planned to complete the five-film story, currently scheduled for December 2029 and December 2031, though dates can shift.
