Why this order?
Star Wars games do not tell one connected story the way a single franchise like The Witcher does, so there is no strict "you must play them in this order" rule. Instead you have decades of releases scattered across roughly four thousand years of in-universe history. That is why we give you two lists. Release order is the honest chronicle of how the games actually evolved, from the LucasArts and BioWare golden age of the early 2000s to the modern EA and Ubisoft era. Timeline order is the fun one for lore fans: it starts in the ancient Old Republic with Knights of the Old Republic (3956 BBY) and marches forward through the Clone Wars, the rise of the Empire, and finally the years after Return of the Jedi.
Where should you actually start? If you love story-driven RPGs, begin with Knights of the Old Republic. It is old but still one of the best-written games Star Wars has ever produced, and its sequel, The Sith Lords, plus the long-running MMO The Old Republic, extend that era for hundreds of hours. If you are a newcomer who just wants a great modern single-player adventure, start with Jedi: Fallen Order (2019) and its sequel Jedi: Survivor (2023). Those two follow the Padawan Cal Kestis, and because they are their own tight two-game saga we cover them on a dedicated page, our Star Wars Jedi guide. This list places them on the wider games timeline, but for a deep dive on just the Cal Kestis story, head there rather than treating this page as the full breakdown.
A few entries are multi-era: the classic Battlefront (2004) and Battlefront II (2005), plus the modern reboots, let you fight across both the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, so we anchor them by their earliest or headline content and flag it in the notes. And remember these are only the games. For the movies see our Star Wars films guide, and for the streaming era see our Star Wars shows guide covering the Disney+ series. The rabbit hole runs deep across all three media.

Frequently asked questions
What order should I play the Star Wars games in?
There is no single required order because the games are not one connected story. For a lore tour, follow the in-universe timeline starting with Knights of the Old Republic (3956 BBY). For a modern single-player start, play Jedi: Fallen Order then Jedi: Survivor. RPG fans should begin with the two KOTOR games.
Which Star Wars game has the earliest in-universe setting?
Knights of the Old Republic, set in 3956 BBY, nearly four thousand years before the films. Its sequel The Sith Lords follows around 3951 BBY, and the MMO The Old Republic sits about 300 years later at roughly 3653 BBY.
Where does Star Wars Outlaws fit on the timeline?
Star Wars Outlaws (2024) is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, during the Galactic Civil War. It follows a new character, the smuggler Kay Vess, so you do not need to play any other game first.
Are Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor covered here or on their own page?
Both appear on this games timeline, but the Cal Kestis story has its own dedicated Bingerun guide, our Star Wars Jedi page. This list places the two games in the wider order; for a focused breakdown of just Fallen Order and Survivor, use that page.
Do the classic and modern Battlefront games have a set timeline placement?
Not really, because the classic Battlefront (2004) and Battlefront II (2005) plus the DICE reboots let you fight across multiple eras. The one clear story anchor is the 2017 Battlefront II campaign, which begins at 4 ABY right after the Battle of Endor.
What is the newest Star Wars game on this list?
Star Wars Outlaws, released August 30, 2024. On the release timeline it follows Jedi: Survivor (2023) and Squadrons (2020).
