Horus Heresy Books in Order

There are 64 numbered Horus Heresy volumes: the 54-book main series (2006-2019) plus the 10-volume Siege of Terra arc, books 55 to 64, which concluded with The End and the Death, Volume III in January 2024. Three unnumbered Siege of Terra novellas sit alongside, and the sequel series The Scouring began with Ashes of the Imperium in December 2025. Read in numbered order; only the opening trilogy is strictly sequential, so we also map a 28-book essentials fast-track.

Horus Heresy Books in Order: complete list

0 / 68 done
  1. Book 1 (Dan Abnett, April 2006). The Great Crusade at its height and Horus made Warmaster; opens the mandatory trilogy and is the only truly fixed starting point

  2. Book 2 (Graham McNeill, June 2006). Direct continuation: Horus is wounded on Davin and corrupted. Must follow book 1 immediately

  3. Book 3 (Ben Counter, October 2006). Trilogy finale: the Isstvan III virus-bombing opens the civil war. Everything after this point is nonlinear

  4. Book 4 (James Swallow, March 2007). Overlaps the end of Galaxy in Flames from Nathaniel Garro's POV as he carries the warning to Terra; sets up Garro (42) and Garro: Knight of Grey

  5. Book 5 (Graham McNeill, July 2007). Runs parallel to books 1-3 from the Emperor's Children side, then climaxes with the Isstvan V Dropsite Massacre, the series' second pillar event

  6. Book 6 (Mitchel Scanlon, October 2007). Jumps roughly 50 years before Horus Rising to Caliban and the young Lion, the series' most notorious 'wait, when is this?' moment. Required for the Dark Angels strand (11, 38)

  7. Book 7 (Dan Abnett, March 2008). Alpha Legion standalone set pre-Isstvan; the Cabal's prophecy pays off much later in Praetorian of Dorn (39)

  8. Book 8 (Ben Counter, August 2008). Word Bearers move against Ultramar; nominal prelude to Know No Fear, and widely rated the most skippable numbered novel

  9. Book 9 (Graham McNeill, December 2008). Civil war on Mars; standalone, but it feeds Tallarn (45) and the titan war of Titandeath (53)

  10. Book 10 (April 2009). First short-story anthology, including the lore-famous 'The Last Church'. Skippable for plot

  11. Book 11 (Mike Lee, July 2009). Direct sequel to Descent of Angels on the Caliban and Diamat threads; needed for Angels of Caliban (38)

  12. Book 12 (Graham McNeill, March 2010). The Burning of Prospero from the Thousand Sons' side; twin novel of Prospero Burns (15), the series' flagship parallel pair. Feeds The Crimson King (44)

  13. Book 13 (James Swallow, August 2010). Assassinorum side story after Isstvan; largely standalone

  14. Book 14 (Aaron Dembski-Bowden, November 2010). The Word Bearers origin of the whole Heresy, opening roughly 43 years before Isstvan and ending at Isstvan V. Essential setup for Know No Fear and Betrayer

  15. Book 15 (Dan Abnett; December 2010 audio and ebook, January 2011 paperback). Space Wolves POV twin of A Thousand Sons, same events from the opposite side; read the two back to back. Feeds Wolfsbane (49)

  16. Book 16 (May 2011). Anthology set in the information-blackout years after Isstvan; several shorts seed later novels

  17. Book 17 (Graham McNeill, November 2011). Terra-set, with the Emperor's secret; contains a famous internal chronology contradiction around Prospero's timing, so never use it to anchor a timeline

  18. Book 18 (Gav Thorpe, January 2012). Raven Guard rebuild after Isstvan V under Alpha Legion infiltration; continued in Corax (40)

  19. Book 19 (Dan Abnett, early 2012). The Betrayal at Calth, the third pillar event. Reads best straight after The First Heretic; feeds Betrayer, Mark of Calth and the Imperium Secundus arc

  20. Book 20 (2012). Four-novella anthology. NOT the separate 'The Horus Heresy: Primarchs' spin-off novel line, a name-collision trap; that line sits outside the 64

  21. Book 21 (James Swallow, August 2012). Blood Angels ambushed at Signus; Sanguinius' major pre-Siege arc

  22. Book 22 (September 2012). The most plot-critical anthology: 'The Crimson Fist' and 'Prince of Crows' are direct setup for Praetorian of Dorn (39) and the Curze arc

  23. Book 23 (Graham McNeill; first edition late 2012, wide paperback 2013). Perturabo and Fulgrim; Fulgrim's transformation matters for the Siege

  24. Book 24 (Aaron Dembski-Bowden; first edition December 2012, wide paperback 2013). World Eaters and Word Bearers rampage through Ultramar after Calth; Angron's ascension. Requires books 14 and 19

  25. Book 25 (April 2013). Calth-aftermath anthology covering the Underworld War; read after Know No Fear

  26. Book 26 (Nick Kyme, August 2013). Vulkan versus Curze after Isstvan; leads directly into The Unremembered Empire and Deathfire

  27. Book 27 (Dan Abnett, October 2013). Imperium Secundus begins at Macragge, a hub novel converging threads from 19, 24 and 26; continues via Pharos (34), Angels of Caliban (38) and Ruinstorm (46)

  28. Book 28 (Chris Wraight, April 2014). The White Scars choose a side after Prospero; follows the 12/15 pair and continues in The Path of Heaven (36)

  29. Book 29 (Graham McNeill, May 2014). Horus at Molech, his big mid-Heresy power-up and the first Horus-centric novel since the trilogy; the Knights-Errant subplot ties to Garro (42)

  30. Book 30 (David Annandale, July 2014). Horror side story for the Isstvan survivor legions, loosely feeding Shattered Legions (43); commonly skipped

  31. Book 31 (February 2015). Anthology of shorts and audio-drama adaptations; skippable for plot

  32. Book 32 (Nick Kyme, November 2015). Salamanders carry Vulkan's body home; sequel to Vulkan Lives, thread continues in Born of Flame (50) and Old Earth (47)

  33. Book 33 (January 2016). Anthology, skippable for plot. Published after Pharos (34) despite the lower number, the one visible wrinkle between numbering and publication dates; read by number regardless

  34. Book 34 (Guy Haley; ebook December 2015, print February 2016). Night Lords assault the Pharos beacon; Imperium Secundus sequel to book 27. Its ebook beat book 33 to release, but keep the numbered order

  35. Book 35 (March 2016). Anthology including 'Aurelian'-era material and audio adaptations; skippable for plot

  36. Book 36 (Chris Wraight, April 2016). White Scars fight toward Terra; sequel to Scars, and its ending directly sets up The Master of Mankind (41) and Warhawk

  37. Book 37 (May 2016). Anthology on Malcador's shadow war; the Garro and Knights-Errant material is later collected into book 42's arc

  38. Book 38 (Gav Thorpe, June 2016). Dark Angels meet Imperium Secundus; sequel to 6, 11, 27 and 34, feeding Ruinstorm (46)

  39. Book 39 (John French, August 2016). Alpha Legion strike at Terra versus the Imperial Fists, the payoff of Legion (7) and 'The Crimson Fist' (22)

  40. Book 40 (Gav Thorpe, October 2016). Compilation of the Raven Guard novellas and shorts continuing Deliverance Lost; buying the standalone novellas duplicates this content

  41. Book 41 (Aaron Dembski-Bowden, December 2016). The Emperor and the webway war beneath Terra, following The Path of Heaven's ending; near-essential context for the Siege

  42. Book 42 (James Swallow, February 2017). Fix-up novel weaving the Garro audio dramas into one arc; follows book 4 and threads toward the Grey Knights. Duplicates the standalone audios

  43. Book 43 (April 2017). Anthology (including 'Meduson'): Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard guerrilla war aboard the Sisypheum, whose crew returns in Sons of the Selenar

  44. Book 44 (Graham McNeill, June 2017). Magnus after Prospero, the direct sequel to A Thousand Sons; resolved in Fury of Magnus during the Siege

  45. Book 45 (John French, August 2017). Compilation of the Tallarn novellas, the largest tank battle in Imperial history; Iron Warriors sequel to the Mechanicum thread. Duplicates the standalone editions

  46. Book 46 (David Annandale, October 2017). Ends Imperium Secundus: Sanguinius, Guilliman and the Lion break for Terra. Required so Sanguinius is on Terra for the Siege

  47. Book 47 (Nick Kyme, November 2017). The reborn Vulkan walks to Terra, merging the Salamanders and Shattered Legions threads toward the endgame

  48. Book 48 (February 2018). Anthology; skippable for plot

  49. Book 49 (Guy Haley, May 2018). Leman Russ' spear-thrust at Horus, following the Wolves thread from book 15; explains the Wolves' absence from the Siege

  50. Book 50 (Nick Kyme, July 2018). Compilation of the Salamanders shorts, novellas and novel including 'Promethean Sun'; duplicates the standalone editions

  51. Book 51 (John French, August 2018). The fractured traitor host reunites and Horus turns for Terra, the direct on-ramp to the Siege

  52. Book 52 (November 2018). Final main-series anthology; bridge material into the Siege

  53. Book 53 (Guy Haley, December 2018). Titan war at Beta-Garmon, the gateway to Terra, paying off Mechanicum and Tallarn; its survivors reappear in Mortis

  54. Book 54 (James Swallow, February 2019). Closes the main list: the Death Guard's fall to Nurgle, Mortarion's damnation and Malcador's endgame on Terra. Hand-off to the Siege

  55. Siege of Terra 1, book 55 (John French, May 2019). Horus' armada breaches the Sol system; from here the order is strictly sequential again

  56. Siege of Terra 2, book 56 (Guy Haley, October 2019). Planetfall and the first ground assaults on the Palace

  57. Siege of Terra 3, book 57 (Gav Thorpe, March 2020). The battle for the Lion's Gate spaceport

  58. Unnumbered Siege of Terra novella (Graham McNeill, 2020, limited edition first). The Sisypheum crew from Shattered Legions on a Luna side mission; slots between The First Wall and Saturnine and is not part of the 64-count

  59. Siege of Terra 4, book 58 (Dan Abnett, July 2020). Dorn's four-front gambit, widely cited as the Siege's high point

  60. Unnumbered Siege of Terra novella (Graham McNeill, October 2020, limited edition first). Magnus on Terra, resolving the Crimson King thread; slots between Saturnine and Mortis, outside the 64-count

  61. Siege of Terra 5, book 59 (John French, April 2021). Titan legions assault the Palace, the Titandeath payoff; the Dark Angels' distant thread advances

  62. Siege of Terra 6, book 60 (Chris Wraight, October 2021). The White Scars' counter-charge, paying off Scars and The Path of Heaven

  63. Siege of Terra 7, book 61 (Aaron Dembski-Bowden, September 2022). Sanguinius holds the Eternity Gate against Angron

  64. Unnumbered Siege of Terra novella (James Swallow, January 2023, all editions simultaneously). Ends the Garro arc begun in books 4 and 42; published after Echoes of Eternity, but its events sit earlier in the Siege, around Mortis and Warhawk. Outside the 64-count

  65. Siege of Terra 8 part 1, book 62 (Dan Abnett, February 2023). One novel split across three numbered volumes; Volume I ends mid-story by design, so all three are mandatory

  66. Siege of Terra 8 part 2, book 63 (Dan Abnett, November 2023). Middle volume of the finale; Horus versus the Emperor aboard the Vengeful Spirit builds here

  67. Siege of Terra 8 part 3, book 64 (Dan Abnett, January 2024). The Heresy's actual conclusion, 18 years after Horus Rising; nothing after this is Horus Heresy proper

  68. The Scouring 1, a sequel series, not book 65 (Chris Wraight; December 5, 2025 in eBook, audiobook and collector hardback, general print from mid-December 2025, region-dependent). Pitched as a fresh entry point but inherently spoils the Siege's ending; optional epilogue on the essentials track. No book 2 titled or dated as of August 2026

Why this order?

Numbered order is the answer, but not for the reason most series make it the answer. For the Horus Heresy the official numbering is also publication order, and it is the sequence Black Library itself, Wargamer and the Black Library recommended list on Goodreads all default to. What the numbers are not is a timeline. Wikipedia's own summary notes the narrative is not strictly sequential: after the mandatory opening trilogy (Horus Rising, False Gods, Galaxy in Flames) the series deliberately jumps around, with Descent of Angels (book 6) set roughly 50 years before book 1 and The First Heretic (book 14) opening about 43 years before Isstvan. Do not attempt a chronological resort; The Outcast Dead even contradicts the established Prospero timing, and 12 anthologies spanning decades make a strict timeline impossible. The numbers are a curation, and they hold even where raw dates wobble - Pharos (34) shipped as an ebook before War Without End (33), and Angel Exterminatus and Betrayer had late-2012 first editions with wide paperbacks in 2013, but the numbering, not format dates, governs.

The real traps are structural. A Thousand Sons (12) and Prospero Burns (15) are the same events from opposite sides and read best back to back, yet the numbered order wedges two unrelated books between them; our essentials track pairs them. Corax (40), Garro (42), Tallarn (45) and Born of Flame (50) are compilations of previously released novellas and audio dramas, so buying the standalones alongside the numbered volumes means paying twice. Book 20, The Primarchs, is an anthology that shares a name with the entirely separate Horus Heresy: Primarchs spin-off novel line, which is not part of the 64. Three official Siege of Terra novellas never got numbers: Sons of the Selenar slots after The First Wall, Fury of Magnus after Saturnine, and Garro: Knight of Grey after Echoes of Eternity, though Knight of Grey's events actually happen earlier in the Siege, around Mortis and Warhawk. The End and the Death is one novel split into three numbered volumes (62-64); Volume I ends mid-story by design and all three are required. And Ashes of the Imperium (December 2025) is book 1 of the sequel series The Scouring, not book 65 - it is pitched as a fresh entry point, but by definition it spoils how the Siege ends.

Because few readers commit to all 64, the second order here is an essentials fast-track of 28 books: the trilogy, the pillar novels, and all 10 Siege volumes. It is a curated shortcut, not an official Black Library product; legion loyalists should add their strand back in (Dark Angels: 6, 11, 38; Salamanders: 26, 32, 47), and of the anthologies only Shadows of Treachery (22) is genuinely plot-critical.

Where to play it today

  • The whole series is published by Black Library (Games Workshop) and sold through regular bookstores; early volumes cycle in and out of print, and limited editions are collector-only, so a given paperback may take some hunting
  • eBooks are sold via blacklibrary.com and mainstream stores including Amazon Kindle and Apple Books; check your regional store, as editions vary by country
  • Audiobooks of the full run - main series, all 10 Siege of Terra volumes plus the three novellas, and Ashes of the Imperium - are on Audible and blacklibrary.com, with Kindle/Audible Whispersync on many volumes
  • No flat-rate subscription covers the series as of August 2026: it is not in Kindle Unlimited, and Warhammer+ is a video service, not a book one, so Audible credits are the usual budget route
  • Corax, Garro, Tallarn and Born of Flame collect previously released novellas and audio dramas; if you own the standalones, the numbered compilations are duplicate purchases, and vice versa
  • Availability and editions shift by region and over time; verify per store before buying (checked August 2, 2026)

Availability changes often and varies by region - links search each platform for The Horus Heresy.

Frequently asked questions

How many Horus Heresy books are there?

64 numbered volumes: the 54-book main series (2006-2019) plus the 10-volume Siege of Terra arc, books 55 to 64, where The End and the Death Volumes I to III count as books 62, 63 and 64 (concluded January 2024). On top of that sit 3 unnumbered Siege of Terra novellas (Sons of the Selenar, Fury of Magnus and Garro: Knight of Grey) and many optional standalone novellas and audio dramas, most later collected inside the numbered volumes. The sequel series The Scouring adds 1 book so far. Competing counts float around because Siege of Terra is marketed as 8 books, and adding the novellas gives 65 to 67.

What order should I read the Horus Heresy in?

Numbered order. For this series the official numbering is also publication order, and Black Library, Wargamer and the Black Library recommended list all treat it as the default. Only the first three books form a strict trilogy; after that the story is deliberately nonlinear, so the numbers are a curation, not a timeline. Do not attempt a strict chronological read: book 6 jumps 50 years before book 1, book 14 opens decades earlier still, and book 17 contradicts the established Prospero timing outright.

Do I have to read all 64 books?

No. The opening trilogy is mandatory; after that the essentials fast-track on this page (28 books: the trilogy, the key pillar novels and all 10 Siege of Terra volumes) delivers the complete arc. Add legion-specific branches if you care about a faction (Dark Angels: 6, 11, 38; Salamanders: 26, 32, 47). The 12 anthologies are mostly skippable, with Shadows of Treachery (22) the notable exception, and Battle for the Abyss (8) is the most widely skipped numbered novel.

Is the Horus Heresy finished?

Yes. The main story ended with The End and the Death, Volume III in January 2024, 18 years after Horus Rising (2006). The follow-up series The Scouring, which began with Ashes of the Imperium on December 5, 2025, continues the aftermath but is a separate series, not book 65.

How long is the whole series?

Well over 25,000 pages across the 64 numbered volumes, which translates to several hundred hours as audiobooks. That scale is exactly why the essentials fast-track exists: most readers who bounce off the series do so somewhere in the anthology-heavy middle stretch, not in the Siege.

Do I need the Horus Heresy before other Warhammer 40k novels, or before The Scouring?

No on both counts. The Heresy is set 10,000 years before the 40k 'present', and any 40k novel stands without it. Ashes of the Imperium is pitched as a fresh entry point to The Scouring, but it unavoidably spoils the Siege of Terra's ending, so if you care about spoilers read at minimum the opening trilogy plus the Siege first.

What about the Primarchs novels? Are they part of the 64?

No, and the naming is a trap. Horus Heresy book 20 is an anthology called The Primarchs, but Black Library also publishes a completely separate spin-off novel line called The Horus Heresy: Primarchs (Roboute Guilliman, Leman Russ and so on). The spin-off line is optional side reading and is not part of the 64 numbered volumes.

When is The Scouring book 2 out?

No second volume has been titled or dated as of August 2026. Ashes of the Imperium (December 2025) is the only released entry; watch Warhammer Community for announcements.

Is there a Horus Heresy TV show or movie?

Not yet. Amazon's untitled Warhammer 40,000 series with Henry Cavill entered early pre-production (per Cavill, June 2025), and Deadline reported Mike Flanagan in talks to executive-produce in July 2026, but there is no cast, era or release date, it is not confirmed to cover the Heresy era at all, and a premiere before 2027-28 looks unrealistic.
