Gundam Watch Order

Gundam spans 29 essential anime entries across two kinds of continuity: the Universal Century saga, from Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) through the 2026 Hathaway sequel, and nine standalone alternate universes. Start with the 1979 original or any alternate universe, never with The Origin.

Why this order?

Gundam has two doors, and both are correct. Door one is the Universal Century, the timeline the franchise is built on: start with Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) or its tighter three-film compilation trilogy, then Zeta Gundam, then optionally ZZ (the one entry fans routinely skip), then the film Char's Counterattack, which is required before anything later: Unicorn, Narrative and the Hathaway films all assume you know how Char's story ends. The OVA side stories (War in the Pocket, Stardust Memory, The 08th MS Team, Thunderbolt, Requiem for Vengeance, Cucuruz Doan's Island) slot in anywhere after the original series, and F91 plus Victory close out the far end of the timeline. Door two is any alternate universe: every series from G Gundam to The Witch from Mercury is self-contained and needs zero homework, with Iron-Blooded Orphans and The Witch from Mercury the usual modern newcomer picks. Turn A is the one to save for late, since its Correct Century quietly folds every other timeline into its backstory.

Two traps to avoid. The Origin looks like the beginning (a prequel about young Char) but was made for veterans and spoils the original series, so never start there. GQuuuuuuX (2025) looks like a fresh alternate universe but is really an alternate-branch Universal Century that remixes and openly spoils the 1979 series; watch it after the original at the earliest.

The 2026 state of play: Hathaway part two, The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, opened in Japanese theaters January 30 and US theaters May 15, with a Netflix window expected to follow the first film's pattern but not officially dated; part three is unannounced. And the next era now has a name: Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2026, opens a brand-new continuity in 2027 under Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex director Kenji Kamiyama, giving newcomers a clean entry point with zero homework.

Frequently asked questions

How many Gundam series are there?

This guide tracks the 29 essential entries: the Universal Century saga (the 1979 original through the Hathaway films, plus its OVA side stories) and nine standalone alternate universes, from G Gundam (1994) to The Witch from Mercury (2022). Compilation films and finale movies are listed under their series.

Where do I start with Gundam?

Two valid doors: the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam (or its three-film compilation) if you want the main Universal Century saga, or any standalone alternate universe if you just want one great series; Iron-Blooded Orphans and The Witch from Mercury are the usual modern picks.

What order should I watch the Universal Century in?

Release order: the original (or film trilogy), Zeta, optionally ZZ, then Char's Counterattack, then Unicorn, Narrative and the Hathaway films, with F91 and Victory at the timeline's far end. Side-story OVAs like War in the Pocket and The 08th MS Team fit anywhere after the original.

Can I skip Gundam ZZ?

Mostly, yes: it is the entry fans skip most, and Char's Counterattack follows on from Zeta cleanly enough. Watch its back half later if you fall in love with the UC; a couple of its characters resurface in Unicorn.

Is Gundam: The Origin a good starting point?

No. It is chronologically first (young Char's rise), but it was made for people who already know the 1979 series and it spoils the original's reveals. Watch it after the original, ideally after Zeta.

Do I need to watch anything before GQuuuuuuX?

Yes, the 1979 original: GQuuuuuuX is an alternate-branch Universal Century that remixes the original series and spoils its story beats freely. It is not the clean newcomer entry its marketing suggests.

Is a new Gundam series coming?

Yes: Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2026, arrives in 2027. It opens a brand-new universe (year A.A. 45, After Apocalypse) shared with the Gundam Rogue Orbit game, written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and starring orphaned pilot Ray Azumi. As a fresh continuity it needs no prior Gundam viewing, making it a clean future entry point. Hathaway part three is also expected but unannounced.
