Why this order?
Candyman's order question has one twist, and it is the same one Halloween 2018 made famous: the newest film picks its own past.
The 1992 original is the foundation - Clive Barker's short story turned into a Chicago legend, with Tony Todd's Candyman haunting Cabrini-Green and graduate student Helen Lyle pulling the thread. It stands entirely on its own and remains one of the great American horror films.
The two 90s sequels continue in a loose line: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) moves the legend to New Orleans and fills in Daniel Robitaille's origin, and Day of the Dead (1999) drifts further with a descendant storyline. Neither is required for anything that came after, and the third was a straight-to-video afterthought.
Then Nia DaCosta's Candyman (2021), produced and co-written by Jordan Peele, returns to Cabrini-Green as a direct sequel to the original set twenty-seven years later. It engages seriously with the first film - Helen's story has itself become legend - and simply ignores the two sequels. Nothing in it acknowledges New Orleans or the descendant plot.
So the honest recommendation: watch 1992 and 2021 as a pair. That is the complete, intended story. Add Farewell to the Flesh if you want more of Todd's Candyman and the origin spelled out; add Day of the Dead only if you are a completist. Release order works fine for all four since the sequels never contradict so much as get left behind.
No fifth film is announced as of 2026.

Frequently asked questions
How many Candyman movies are there?
Four: Candyman (1992), Farewell to the Flesh (1995), Day of the Dead (1999), and Candyman (2021). The 2021 film is a direct sequel to the original that ignores the two 90s sequels.
What order should I watch the Candyman movies in?
For the story that matters: the 1992 original, then the 2021 film - they form one continuous, intended pair set twenty-seven years apart. If you want everything, release order works: 1992, 1995, 1999, 2021. The sequels get left behind rather than contradicted.
Is Candyman (2021) a remake?
No, a direct sequel. It returns to Cabrini-Green a generation after the original, and Helen Lyle's story from 1992 has itself become part of the legend the new film examines. You need the 1992 film first; you do not need anything else.
Do I need to watch Farewell to the Flesh and Day of the Dead?
No. The 2021 film skips both entirely. Farewell to the Flesh is worth a look if you want more Tony Todd and the origin story told in full; Day of the Dead is a straight-to-video entry for completists.
Can I watch Candyman (2021) without seeing the original?
It functions, but you lose the point: the film is built as a conversation with 1992, down to characters, locations and the fate of Helen Lyle. The original is 99 minutes and one of the best horror films of its decade. Watch it first.
Is Candyman based on a book?
On Clive Barker's short story The Forbidden, from his Books of Blood - relocated from Liverpool to Chicago for the film, which is where the story's themes of housing, race and urban legend took their now-famous shape.
Is another Candyman movie coming?
Nothing is announced as of August 2026. The 2021 film ended in a way that allows more, but no sequel has been dated or confirmed.
How long does it take to watch the Candyman movies?
All four run about 6 and a half hours. The essential pair - 1992 and 2021 - is about 3 hours 10 minutes.
