Why this order?
Release order is the sane path through this franchise, and the good news is that the spinoffs are built to be skippable: each NCIS series stands on its own, so you can follow the flagship alone, add the spinoffs you like, and lose nothing essential. Start with NCIS (2003), and slot in Los Angeles (2009), New Orleans (2014), Hawai'i (2021) and Sydney (2023) wherever you meet them; they share a world and occasionally trade characters, but they do not depend on each other.
Two entries bend the timeline. NCIS: Origins (2024) is a full prequel, set in 1991 at Camp Pendleton and following a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, narrated by Mark Harmon's older Gibbs. Timeline purists can start there, but it is written for people who already know the man he becomes, which is why we keep it in release order. NCIS: Tony & Ziva (2025) is the other special case: a ten-episode limited series reuniting two flagship favorites, best watched after you know their history; it was cancelled after its single season, so those ten episodes are the whole story.
The franchise also technically begins inside another show entirely: NCIS was introduced through a two-part backdoor pilot in JAG's eighth season.
