Invincible Comics Reading Order

Why this order?

The ordering question for Invincible is not really "which issue first" but "which collected format do I buy." The main run is a single 144-issue story by Robert Kirkman with Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, published by Image and Skybound from January 2003 to February 2018. It reads in straight numerical order, so the only real decision is the edition. The three giant Compendiums are the most common recommendation and the cheapest per page: Volume 1 collects issues #0 to #47, Volume 2 covers #48 to #96, and Volume 3 finishes with #97 to #144. If you prefer sturdier hardcovers, the 12 Ultimate Collection volumes carry the same run in bookshelf-friendly chunks, and the roughly 25 slimmer trade paperbacks are the most portable (and easiest to sample) option.

If you found this because of the Amazon animated series, note that our separate Invincible show watch guide tracks the episodes, while the comic goes much further and much darker. The show is broadly faithful but shuffles the timeline, so beats land in a different order on screen than on the page. Through four seasons the series has reached issue #78, the end of the Viltrumite War, so readers who want to keep going past the adaptation should pick up at issue #79, the start of Volume 15 ("Get Smart"). Since the run is one continuous story, the safest move is simply to start at Compendium 1 and read forward.

The tie-ins are optional flavor, not required reading. The Astounding Wolf-Man (25 issues, 2007 to 2010) and Brit (three early one-shots plus a 12-issue series) build out Kirkman's shared universe, and the Invincible Returns one-shot (numbered #70.5) is a jumping-on recap that sits between issues #70 and #71. You can read the main run cover to cover and never touch them, or slot each near its crossover point for the full universe. Newcomers should ignore them on a first pass and stick to the Compendiums.
