Lee Child has answered this one himself: read in publication order, starting with Killing Floor (1997). The novels are built as standalones, so nothing breaks if you wander, but the writing and the character sharpen book by book, and jumping to late entries first makes the early ones feel like prequels in the wrong sense.

The chronological alternative exists because a handful of novels dive into Reacher's past. The Enemy (published 2004) is the earliest-set, with Reacher still in the Army in 1990; Night School (2016) visits 1996; and The Affair (2011) covers the months right before Killing Floor, explaining why he left the service.
