Why this order?
Silent Hill has a reputation for being impenetrable, but its real structure is the opposite of a homework list. Every mainline game is a self-contained story with one exception: Silent Hill 3 is the direct sequel to the 1999 original, continuing the Harry, Alessa and Order storyline through Heather. That single dependency is the only hard rule in the franchise. The numbering is the trap, because Silent Hill 2 shares nothing with its predecessor except the town itself and requires zero prior knowledge.
For newcomers the cleanest path starts with the Silent Hill 2 remake from 2024, a faithful and expanded Bloober Team production that works as a legitimate substitute for the 2001 original and as the best entry point in the whole series. Follow it with Silent Hill f from 2025, a fully standalone story set in 1960s rural Japan and written by Ryukishi07. The Short Message, a free PS5 release, works as a taster at any point. Commit to the Alessa arc once you are hooked: Silent Hill 1 into Silent Hill 3, with Origins as an optional prequel. Origins is chronologically first in that arc but was the fifth mainline game released, the classic release order trap. Homecoming leans on the same cult lore and works as an optional companion, never a requirement.
Watch for the substitution traps. Shattered Memories looks like a remake of the first game but is a reimagining in a separate continuity, so it cannot stand in for Silent Hill 1 before you play 3. The HD Collection from 2012 is a notoriously broken port of 2 and 3, worth touching only because it remains the sole storefront path to Silent Hill 3. The original Silent Hill has no modern release at all, which means original hardware or emulation until Bloober's announced remake arrives; that remake has no release date, and the 2027 year floating around comes from a store leak. Silent Hill 4 fares best of the classics thanks to a definitive GOG version that restored its cut hauntings in 2025.
The films split into two continuities. The 2006 film and 2012's Revelation adapt Silent Hill 1 and 3 in sequence, neatly mirroring the games' one dependency. Return to Silent Hill, released in January 2026, is a standalone reboot that adapts Silent Hill 2 instead, so three different tellings of that story now coexist across the 2001 game, the 2024 remake and the 2026 film. Next on the calendar is Silent Hill: Townfall from Screen Burn Interactive and Annapurna, a confirmed standalone story launching September 24, 2026 on PS5 and PC.

Frequently asked questions
How many Silent Hill games are there?
There are 11 playable Silent Hill games in this guide: the Team Silent classics (Silent Hill, 2, 3 and 4: The Room), the western era (Origins, Homecoming, Shattered Memories and Downpour) and the modern era (The Short Message, the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f). Silent Hill: Townfall makes it 12 when it launches on September 24, 2026. A handful of spin-offs (Play Novel, The Arcade, the Orphan mobile trilogy and Book of Memories) are effectively unobtainable today and are not order steps.
What order should I play the Silent Hill games in?
Almost any order works. The only hard rule is to play Silent Hill 1 before Silent Hill 3, which continues its story directly. Origins is an optional prequel to that arc and Homecoming an optional lore companion. Everything else, including Silent Hill 2 and its remake, 4, Shattered Memories, Downpour, The Short Message and f, is standalone. Newcomers should start with the Silent Hill 2 remake, then Silent Hill f, then tackle the 1 to 3 arc once they can source the original.
Do I need to play Silent Hill 1 before Silent Hill 2?
No. Silent Hill 2 shares only the town and requires no knowledge of the first game. The numbering misleads here: 2 is standalone but 3 is the direct sequel to 1. The 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2 is equally standalone and is the recommended way to play that story.
Is Silent Hill: Shattered Memories a remake of the first game?
No. It is a reimagining that retells the premise of Silent Hill 1 in a separate continuity with a different plot and a psychological profiling mechanic. It is not a substitute for the original, so it does not prepare you for Silent Hill 3. It never received a modern re-release; its only digital outing was a long-dead EU PSN version for PSP.
Can I still play P.T. or Silent Hill: Ascension?
Not really. P.T., the free 2014 teaser for the cancelled Kojima and del Toro project Silent Hills, was delisted in 2015 and only exists on consoles that already downloaded it. Silent Hill: Ascension, the 2023 interactive streaming series, had its interactivity shut down on June 28, 2025; its episodes survive as watch-only archives on YouTube, Tubi and Sony Pictures Core. Despite heavy criticism of its monetization, Ascension won a 2024 Emmy for innovation in emerging media.
Is the Silent Hill 1 remake coming out in 2027?
No date exists. Bloober Team's remake of the first Silent Hill was officially announced in June 2025 and confirmed to be in full production in October 2025, but Konami has given no release window; the 2027 date circulating online comes from a store leak. Konami has also clarified that earnings report wording about a brand new title referred to Townfall, so the confirmed pipeline is Townfall plus the Silent Hill 1 remake.
Are the Silent Hill movies connected to each other?
Only partly. The 2006 Silent Hill film and 2012's Revelation form one continuity, adapting Silent Hill 1 and 3 in turn and mirroring the games' one dependency. Return to Silent Hill (2026) is a standalone reboot that adapts Silent Hill 2; director Christophe Gans has said it is not a sequel to his 2006 film. Watch it alongside the Silent Hill 2 remake rather than after Revelation.
