Why this order?
Black Butler looks linear on streaming menus: five numbered seasons, watch them top to bottom. That numbering is a lie. The 2008 series starts as a manga adaptation, but it weaves anime-original characters (the demon hound Pluto, the angel Ash) through its first half, and episodes 16 to 24 are a wholly anime-original ending. Book of Circus, marketed in the West as Season 3, does not continue any of that: it quietly rewinds to the middle of Season 1, resumes the manga's real storyline with the Noah's Ark Circus arc, and pretends the first season's back half and all of Season 2 never happened.
That makes Black Butler II the franchise's great skip debate. It is 100 percent anime-original, a sequel to Season 1's anime-original ending, and its finale is irreconcilable with the manga. Purists skip it entirely; completists watch it after Season 1 as a self-contained alternate continuity. Both camps agree on the one thing that matters: never treat Book of Circus as its sequel.
The canon line then hides its two most important entries outside the TV seasons. Book of Murder is an easy-to-miss OVA pair, but it is mandatory canon between Circus and the movie; note that MAL dates it 2015 via the home-video release, though it screened theatrically in late 2014. Book of the Atlantic is a theatrical film that contains the Undertaker reveal, and Public School Arc opens assuming you have seen it, so skipping the movie creates a hard plot hole. The ten-year TV gap and the A-1 Pictures to CloverWorks studio change also make Public School Arc look like a reboot. It is not: it is a direct continuation.
One last paradox for filler-list readers: MAL flags 15 of Season 1's 24 episodes as filler, 62.5 percent, yet the fully anime-original Season 2 carries zero flags. That is because MAL marks episodes that deviate inside an adaptation, while a standalone anime-original season gets treated as its own continuity, so the least canon season in the franchise scores as filler-free. And no, Season 6 is not announced: the release dates circulating on rumor sites and TikTok are invented, and as of July 2026 nothing new has been confirmed by Aniplex or CloverWorks.

Frequently asked questions
How many Black Butler seasons and movies are there?
Seven main entries: the 24-episode 2008 series, Black Butler II (2010, 12 episodes), Book of Circus (2014, 10 episodes), the Book of Murder OVA pair (2014), the film Book of the Atlantic (2017), Public School Arc (2024, 11 episodes) and Emerald Witch Arc (2025, 13 episodes), plus a 2009 comedy special and six non-canon Season 2 extras.
What order should I watch Black Butler in?
Release order with one decision point: the 2008 series first, then Black Butler II if you want the anime-original detour (or skip it), then Book of Circus, Book of Murder, Book of the Atlantic, Public School Arc and Emerald Witch Arc. Everything from Book of Circus onward is the manga-canon storyline.
Can I skip Black Butler II?
Yes. It is 100 percent anime-original, its ending contradicts the manga-canon line, and Book of Circus ignores it completely. Purists skip it while completists enjoy it as a self-contained alternate continuity after Season 1, but both camps agree Book of Circus is not its sequel.
Is Book of Circus a sequel to Season 2?
No. Despite being marketed as Season 3 in the West, Book of Circus rewinds to the middle of Season 1 and resumes the manga's storyline, discarding Season 1's anime-original ending and all of Season 2 from continuity.
Do I need to watch Book of Murder and Book of the Atlantic?
Yes, both are mandatory manga canon even though neither is a numbered TV season. Book of Murder bridges Book of Circus and the movie, and Book of the Atlantic contains the Undertaker reveal that Public School Arc assumes you have seen, so skipping it creates a hard plot hole.
Is Public School Arc a reboot of Black Butler?
No. Despite the ten-year gap since the last TV season and the switch from A-1 Pictures to CloverWorks, Public School Arc is a direct continuation of Book of the Atlantic, picking up the manga's Weston College arc.
When is Black Butler Season 6 coming out?
It is not announced. As of July 2026 no continuation has been confirmed by Aniplex or CloverWorks, and the specific release dates circulating on rumor sites and TikTok are invented. Emerald Witch Arc (2025) is the most recent entry.
How many Black Butler episodes are filler?
Of the 72 episodes tracked in this guide, 15 are marked filler, and the tracker above marks every one so you can skip straight past them.
