Why this order?

Psycho-Pass rewards release order with exactly one correction, and that correction is the reason this page exists. The spine: season one (2012, the Urobuchi classic), season two (2014), The Movie (2015, following Kogami abroad), then the Sinners of the System film trilogy (2019), three compact character films that reposition the board. Then comes the fix: Providence, the 2023 film, is set in January 2118, two years before season three, and it exists specifically to bridge the gap between Sinners Case 3 and season 3, explaining what happened to Akane. Watch it before season three, even though it released three years after; watching by release date alone leaves season three's biggest questions unanswered on purpose for four years of real time, which is not an experience worth recreating.

Season three (2019) hands the lead to two new Inspectors, Arataka and Kei, with eight double-length episodes, and it does not conclude: Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector (2020) is the actual ending of that story, a feature-length special that resolves the cliffhanger. Treat it as mandatory, not bonus material.

Two footnotes. The season one Extended Edition (2014) is a recap re-edit; skip it. And nothing new is confirmed beyond Providence, which was the tenth-anniversary project: season four talk as of mid-2026 is speculation, so finish with First Inspector and Providence and you are fully caught up on the Sibyl System.

Frequently asked questions

How many Psycho-Pass seasons and movies are there?

Three TV seasons (2012, 2014, 2019), five films (The Movie, the three Sinners of the System films, Providence) and the First Inspector finale special: nine entries in all, released 2012 to 2023.

What order should I watch Psycho-Pass in?

Release order with one fix: season 1, season 2, The Movie, Sinners of the System Cases 1 to 3, then Providence, then season 3 and First Inspector. Providence released in 2023 but is set before season 3 and belongs there.

Why watch Providence before Psycho-Pass 3?

Providence is set in January 2118, roughly two years before season 3, and was made to bridge Sinners Case 3 into season 3: it shows the events season 3 spends its runtime hinting at, including what happened to Akane. Chronological placement beats release date here.

Is First Inspector optional?

No. Psycho-Pass 3 ends on an unresolved cliffhanger, and First Inspector (2020) is its feature-length conclusion. Treat season 3 plus First Inspector as one story.

Should I watch the Psycho-Pass Extended Edition?

Skip it: the 2014 Extended Edition is a recap re-edit of season one made to warm up broadcast audiences for season two. It adds nothing if you have seen the original 22 episodes.

Is Psycho-Pass season 4 coming?

Nothing is confirmed. Providence (2023) was the tenth-anniversary project and the most recent entry; season 4 chatter as of mid-2026 remains speculation without an announcement from Production I.G.
