The classic mistake sits in the middle: Third Stage is a theatrical movie, not a TV season, so viewers binging the series on streaming routinely jump from Second to Fourth Stage and wonder why Takumi's life moved on between episodes. Do not skip the movie; it closes the high-school era. The two Extra Stage OVAs are side stories about Iketani and Mako (2001, slots after Second Stage) and their later coda (2008, after Fourth Stage); both are optional. The Battle Stage compilations (2002, 2007, 2021) are race highlight reels with no new story, safe to ignore entirely.

The New Initial D the Movie trilogy (Legend 1 Awakening, Legend 2 Racer, Legend 3 Dream, 2014-2016) is a reboot: a re-telling of First Stage material with a new cast and, controversially, J-rock instead of Eurobeat. It is an alternative fast entry into the story, not a continuation, so treat it as either your on-ramp or a curiosity, never as required viewing after Final Stage.
