Toy Story Movies in Order

Why this order?

Toy Story is the rare franchise where the simplest plan is also the best one. The five mainline films were released in story order, so watching them by release date and watching them chronologically produces the exact same sequence: Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), Toy Story 4 (2019), and Toy Story 5 (2026). Each picks up roughly where the last left off as Andy grows up, the toys change hands, and Woody and Buzz wrestle with what it means to be loved and then let go. There is no clever reordering to chase here, which is why release order is the default.

The one genuine gotcha is Lightyear (2022). Despite the name and the familiar Space Ranger, it is not a mainline chapter of the toy story. It is a spin-off framed as the fictional sci-fi movie that, within the Toy Story universe, was so popular it inspired the Buzz Lightyear action figure Andy receives in the first film. By strict release date it now lands between Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 5, but because of that framing we bracket it after the mainline run in the story order. Slotting it earlier would misread the joke and spoil nothing, but it breaks the emotional throughline of the mainline arc.

Our chronological toggle exists mainly to make that distinction explicit: it keeps the five films in the same 1995-2026 order and clearly brackets Lightyear as a watch-anytime companion. Newcomers and families can safely treat the five mainline entries as the canon and save Lightyear for later.

For context, this is Pixar's flagship series, the studio behind Up, Inside Out, and Finding Nemo, and the first feature-length computer-animated film ever made. The newest chapter, Toy Story 5, opened in theaters on June 19, 2026 to a franchise-record domestic debut of roughly $160 million. It extends the main arc rather than the Lightyear branch, with Woody and the gang confronting kids' shift to tech and the tablet Lilypad. The short Toy Story Toons and holiday specials are fun but fully optional.
