Why this order?
Toy Story is the rare franchise where the simplest plan is also the best one. The four mainline films were released in story order, so watching them by release date and watching them chronologically produces the exact same sequence: Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), and Toy Story 4 (2019). Each picks up roughly where the last left off as Andy grows up, the toys change hands, and Woody and Buzz wrestle with what it means to be loved and then let go. There is no clever reordering to chase here, which is why release order is the default.
The one genuine gotcha is Lightyear (2022). Despite the name and the familiar Space Ranger, it is not chapter five of the toy story. It is a spin-off framed as the fictional sci-fi movie that, within the Toy Story universe, was so popular it inspired the Buzz Lightyear action figure Andy receives in the first film. Because of that framing, we place it after the main four rather than between them. Slotting it earlier would misread the joke and spoil nothing, but it breaks the emotional throughline of the mainline arc.
Our chronological toggle exists mainly to make that distinction explicit: it keeps the four films in the same 1995-2019 order and clearly brackets Lightyear as a watch-anytime companion. Newcomers and families can safely treat the four numbered entries as the canon and save Lightyear for later.
For context, this is Pixar's flagship series, the studio behind Up, Inside Out, and Finding Nemo, and the first feature-length computer-animated film ever made. A fifth mainline film, Toy Story 5, is slated for 2026 and will extend the main arc rather than the Lightyear branch. The short Toy Story Toons and holiday specials are fun but fully optional.

Frequently asked questions
How many Toy Story movies are there?
There are four mainline Toy Story films released between 1995 and 2019, plus the 2022 spin-off Lightyear. A fifth mainline film, Toy Story 5, is slated for 2026.
What order should I watch Toy Story in?
Watch the four mainline films by release date: Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), and Toy Story 4 (2019). This is also the chronological story order. Save Lightyear (2022) for last, since it is a spin-off.
Is Lightyear part of the Toy Story story?
Not directly. Lightyear is a spin-off framed as the in-universe sci-fi movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy. It sits apart from the main arc and can be watched any time, ideally after the four mainline films.
Does the watch order differ from release order?
No. Because the mainline films came out in story order, release order and chronological order are identical for the core four. Only Lightyear's placement as a spin-off needs clarifying.
Do I need to watch the Toy Story shorts and specials?
No. The Toy Story Toons shorts and holiday specials are entertaining extras but are not required to follow the main story.
Is there going to be a Toy Story 5?
Yes. Toy Story 5 is in development at Pixar and slated for release in 2026, continuing the mainline story arc rather than the Lightyear spin-off branch.
