Why this order?
Final Fantasy VII is the rare game whose universe outgrew the series it belongs to. The mainline series has its own guide at /order/final-fantasy/, where every numbered entry is a fresh world; this page is the deep dive into the FF7 universe itself, which spans two separate continuities. The first is the original 1997 game and its Compilation follow-ups. The second is the modern Remake trilogy, which revisits the same story on its own terms.
Release order is our default because, unusually, it works. The 1997 original comes first and is completely self-contained. Advent Children (2005) is a CG film sequel set two years later, Dirge of Cerberus (2006) continues one year after that, and Crisis Core, the prequel about Zack Fair, is best played through its 2022 Reunion remaster, which lands between Remake and Rebirth in release order, exactly where its story matters for the new trilogy. The Compilation is also where release order and story order nearly reverse: Crisis Core is chronologically the earliest story here, yet it was the last of these entries to release. Our chronological toggle covers the Compilation continuity only, running Crisis Core Reunion, the original, Advent Children, then Dirge of Cerberus.
The real question for newcomers is which continuity to start with. We recommend the 1997 original first. The Remake trilogy is not a replacement for it: Remake covers only the Midgar chapter, and without spoiling anything, the new games are written in a way that plays differently, and lands harder, if you already know the original story. Starting with Remake Intergrade is still a legitimate path if 1997 presentation is a dealbreaker, especially now that the whole released trilogy runs on PS5, PC, Switch 2 and Xbox with modern assists. If you take that route, play the original before Part 3 arrives.
A few boundaries keep this page honest. The Remake trilogy is its own continuity, so it sits in release order but stays out of the chronological story toggle. Part 3, Revelation, has only a Spring 2027 window so far, so it lives in the FAQ rather than in the list. Before Crisis, Ever Crisis, The First Soldier and the de-canonized Last Order OVA are side matter, handled in the FAQ as well.

Frequently asked questions
How many Final Fantasy 7 games are there?
This guide tracks six essential entries: five games and one CG film. They are the original Final Fantasy VII (1997), the film Advent Children (2005), Dirge of Cerberus (2006), Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020), Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (2022, remastering the 2007 PSP prequel) and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024). The wider universe adds Before Crisis (2004), the shut-down mobile games The First Soldier and Ever Crisis, the de-canonized Last Order OVA, and the upcoming trilogy finale Revelation.
Should I play the original Final Fantasy VII or the Remake trilogy first?
We recommend the original first. The Remake games revisit the 1997 story in a way that plays differently, and hits harder, if you already know it, so the original is the richer entry point, and its February 2026 Steam and GOG edition adds speed and encounter toggles that remove most of the friction. Starting with Remake Intergrade is a fair alternative if PS1 era presentation puts you off; in that case, play the original before Part 3 arrives.
Does Final Fantasy VII Remake replace the original game?
No. Remake covers only the Midgar opening of the 1997 game, expanded into a full release, and it is not a one to one retelling. Without spoiling anything, it openly rewards players who know the original, which is why this guide treats the two continuities as parallel paths rather than substitutes.
When does Final Fantasy VII Revelation come out?
Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the Remake trilogy finale, was announced on June 5, 2026 at Summer Game Fest with a Spring 2027 window, landing in the 30th anniversary year of the original. No exact date exists yet, so any specific day circulating online is fabricated. It launches day one on PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it requires Remake and Rebirth first.
What are Ever Crisis and Before Crisis?
Before Crisis (2004) is a Japan only mobile prequel about the Turks whose servers are long dead, so it survives as lore rather than as a playable step. Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, a free to play gacha retelling of the saga, hosts the only official retellings of Before Crisis (three chapters rolling out July to September 2026) and Dirge of Cerberus (its chapters ran January to May 2026), but the service shuts down on October 6, 2026 and new Steam installs were suspended in July 2026, so do not start it now. The First Soldier, a mobile battle royale, already shut down in January 2023.
Is Dirge of Cerberus getting a remaster or a remake?
No. Square Enix developers have talked in interviews about being open to revisiting Vincent's story after Revelation, but nothing is announced. Dirge of Cerberus remains a PS2 exclusive that has never been re-released, so a secondhand disc is the only way to play it.
Which versions of the Final Fantasy 7 games should I play?
Crisis Core: the 2022 Reunion remaster over the PSP original, unless you specifically want the original voice cast. Remake: the Intergrade version, because the INTERmission episode with Yuffie is missing from the base PS4 release and sets up Rebirth. Advent Children: the Complete cut, about 26 minutes longer and bundled with the optional Episode: Denzel OVA. The original game: the February 2026 Steam and GOG edition, which supersedes the old 2013 Edition on PC, or any console port with boosters. Last Order, a de-canonized 2005 OVA, exists only on old bonus discs and is a curiosity, not a requirement.
