Yellowstone is the anchor everyone starts with, and for good reason: it's the show that built the world. The flagship ran five seasons (2018-2024) and follows John Dutton's fight to hold the largest ranch in Montana against developers, politicians, and his own fractured family. Starting here gives you the modern stakes and the family dynasty before you rewind to see how the Duttons earned — and bled for — that land.

Our default watch order puts Yellowstone first, then the prequels for backstory. This is how the saga was actually released and how most fans experience it: 1883 lands harder once you already love the Duttons, because you watch their ancestors cross the country knowing what the family becomes. 1923 then bridges the gap, covering the Great Depression and Prohibition-era trials of the next generation. Each prequel deepens lines of dialogue you half-noticed in the flagship.

The chronological order flips this for viewers who prefer a clean timeline: 1883 (the wagon-train origin), then 1923 (the survival years), then Yellowstone (present day). It's a perfectly valid way in, especially for newcomers who want events to unfold front to back — just know you'll meet the family at their poorest before their power.

The key gotcha: 1883 and 1923 are companion series, not season-style continuations, so titles do not chain neatly — don't expect a "Season 2" of either to slot beside Yellowstone.
