Practical Magic Books and Movies in Order
There are six Practical Magic entries: four Alice Hoffman novels (Practical Magic 1995, The Rules of Magic 2017, Magic Lessons 2020, The Book of Magic 2021) and two films (Practical Magic 1998 and Practical Magic 2, in US theaters September 11, 2026). The novel series is complete at four. Two orders are valid, publication and chronological, and the author herself declines to pick one; the minimal path into the sequel is simply the 1998 film.

Why this order?
This is one of the rare franchises where the author has been asked the order question directly and refused to settle it: Alice Hoffman's own site endorses both publication order and chronological order and leaves the choice to the reader, so this guide presents both rather than inventing a canon.
Publication order is how the audience actually lived it, and it has a genuinely strange shape. After the original 1995 novel and its 1998 film adaptation, the series goes backward in time twice: The Rules of Magic (2017) is a prequel about aunts Franny and Jet in mid-century New York, and Magic Lessons (2020) is a prequel to that prequel, jumping 300 years back to Maria Owens and the origin of the family curse in the 1600s. Only the fourth book, The Book of Magic (2021), is the actual sequel. Reading 'in order' by release date means walking away from the present-day story for two whole books before finally getting the ending.
Chronological order fixes that by starting with Magic Lessons, which reads like book three on a shelf but is the story's true beginning, then The Rules of Magic, then Practical Magic, then The Book of Magic. The films slot in next to the novels they adapt, since they retell the same beats: the 1998 film beside the 1995 novel, Practical Magic 2 beside The Book of Magic. Notice that The Book of Magic holds last place in both orders; publication and chronology converge at the end.
The film track is its own trap. Practical Magic 2 is a direct sequel to the 1998 FILM, which was a loose adaptation with invented plot elements, not to the books' continuity. It adapts book four and skips both prequel novels entirely, so filmgoers hunting for a 'Practical Magic 2 novel' need The Book of Magic. The minimal viewing path is just the 1998 film, then the sequel; the four novels are the deeper track, not homework. Two last snares: no TV series exists (HBO Max ordered a pilot of The Rules of Magic in August 2019, and the project was confirmed dead in February 2024 without ever airing), and any source dating Practical Magic 2 to September 18 is recycling the pre-February-2026 announcement; the film moved up to September 11 in the US, with international rollout beginning September 9.

Where to play it today
- Practical Magic (1998) streams on HBO Max in the US as of early August 2026, including through the HBO Max channel on Prime Video, and rents or sells on Amazon Video and Apple TV; those are the verified options, while listings on free ad-supported services such as Tubi circulate but could not be confirmed as of August 3, 2026
- A Netflix listing for the 1998 film exists in select regions only; treat it as region-dependent rather than a US option
- The first-ever 4K UHD remaster of the 1998 film lands August 25, 2026 digitally and on 4K Blu-ray, in standard and limited steelbook editions, about two and a half weeks before the sequel opens
- Practical Magic 2 is theatrical only from September 11, 2026 (US); as a Warner Bros. title it will presumably reach HBO Max after the theatrical window, but no streaming date has been announced, so do not plan around one
- All four novels are in print and widely available in paperback, ebook and audio; Simon & Schuster publishes the three later books, and Practical Magic itself also circulates in Penguin Random House editions
- Streaming lineups shift monthly, so check a service before relying on it; HBO Max is the current anchor as of early August 2026

Frequently asked questions
How many Practical Magic books and movies are there?
Six entries total: four Alice Hoffman novels (Practical Magic 1995, The Rules of Magic 2017, Magic Lessons 2020, The Book of Magic 2021) and two films (Practical Magic 1998 and Practical Magic 2, due September 11, 2026). The novel series is complete at four; no fifth Owens book exists or is announced.
Do I need to read the books before Practical Magic 2?
No. The sequel continues the 1998 film's story, so watching that film is the only real prerequisite. It adapts The Book of Magic (2021), which makes that novel the natural companion read, but the film series skips the two prequel novels entirely.
What order should I read the Practical Magic books in?
Both orders are valid, and the author says so herself: publication order (Practical Magic, The Rules of Magic, Magic Lessons, The Book of Magic) or chronological order (Magic Lessons, The Rules of Magic, Practical Magic, The Book of Magic). Alice Hoffman's official site answers the question with 'It's up to you!' Publication order walks backward in time twice before reaching the sequel; chronological order starts 300 years early with Magic Lessons.
Is Practical Magic 2 based on a book?
Yes: The Book of Magic (2021), the fourth and final novel. That means the film series jumps from book one straight to book four, skipping both prequels, and there is no novel actually titled Practical Magic 2.
When does Practical Magic 2 come out?
September 11, 2026 in US theaters (Warner Bros., wide), with the international rollout beginning September 9 and UK and Irish cinemas also opening September 11. The film was originally dated September 18, 2026 and moved up in February 2026, so any source still citing September 18, for the US or the UK, is working from the stale original date.
Where can I stream the original Practical Magic (1998)?
As of August 3, 2026 it streams on HBO Max in the US, including via the HBO Max channel on Prime Video, and rents on Amazon Video and Apple TV. Free ad-supported listings such as Tubi circulate but were unconfirmed at that date, and a Netflix listing exists only in select regions. A first-ever 4K remaster arrives August 25, 2026 digitally and on 4K Blu-ray.
Is there a Practical Magic TV series?
No. HBO Max ordered a pilot of The Rules of Magic in August 2019 (from Melissa Rosenberg, with a ten-script order and writers room), but the project was confirmed dead in February 2024 by producer Denise Di Novi and never aired. Fans remembering that announcement will not find a series anywhere.
Who returns in Practical Magic 2?
Sandra Bullock (Sally), Nicole Kidman (Gillian), Stockard Channing (Frances) and Dianne Wiest (Jet) all return, with Susanne Bier directing from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, Georgia Pritchett and Kelly Marcel. New cast includes Joey King and Maisie Williams as the next Owens generation, matching the novel's focus on Sally's daughters Kylie and Antonia, plus Lee Pace, Xolo Mariduena and Solly McLeod.
