Why this order?
Dragon Ball looks intimidating because of all the similarly named shows, but the canonical spine is short and simple. Start with the original Dragon Ball (1986), which follows a young Goku from his childhood adventures all the way through the World Martial Arts Tournaments, ending with the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and the Piccolo Jr. arc. It sets up every character and rivalry that matters later, and its lighter, gag-driven tone is part of the charm. Skipping it is the single most common mistake new viewers make.
Next comes Dragon Ball Z (1989), the main saga most people picture when they hear the name. This is where the Saiyans, Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu arrive and the series shifts into world-ending battles. Here you face the one real fork: Dragon Ball Z Kai (2009) is a remaster of the exact same story, recut to follow Akira Toriyama's manga far more tightly, trimming the filler and pacing problems Z is famous for. Watch Z or Kai, never both. Pick Kai if you want the leaner ride, classic Z if you want every minute.
Set between Z and Super is Dragon Ball Daima (2024), a Toriyama-led series that takes place in Age 775, shortly after the Buu Saga and a few years before Super. Despite being one of the most recent releases, it is not a sequel that comes last; chronologically it slots in right after Z/Kai. Watch it before Super if you want the in-universe timeline, though it is self-contained enough that it can also be saved for later without spoiling the main spine.
After that, Dragon Ball Super (2015) is the canonical sequel, continuing the story past Buu with new gods, universes, and tournaments. The Super-era films slot in here too: Battle of Gods and Resurrection F were folded into Super, while Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Super Hero continue the timeline afterward.
The big gotcha is Dragon Ball GT (1996), an older anime-original continuation made without Toriyama writing the story. It is non-canon and contradicted by Super, so treat it as an optional side path, not part of the main order. Fans of long-running shonen will find this structure familiar from One Piece and Naruto.

Frequently asked questions
What order should I watch Dragon Ball in?
Watch Dragon Ball first, then Dragon Ball Z (or the tighter Z Kai recut), then Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball Daima is set between Z and Super, so watch it there if you want the in-universe timeline. Dragon Ball GT is non-canon and optional, and the Super-era films slot in around Super.
How many seasons and episodes are there?
The original Dragon Ball has 153 episodes, Dragon Ball Z has 291, Dragon Ball Super has 131, and Dragon Ball GT has 64. Dragon Ball Z Kai's initial 2009-2011 broadcast ran 167 episodes ending at the Cell Saga, with the Majin Buu arc added later as 'The Final Chapters' (about 61 more episodes in Japan), so the complete Kai recut is considerably longer. Daima is a newer, shorter series.
Should I watch Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai?
Pick one, not both. They tell the same story. Z Kai is a remaster that cuts filler and follows the manga more closely; classic Z includes every original episode but has slower pacing.
Is Dragon Ball GT canon?
No. GT (1996) is an anime-original continuation made without Akira Toriyama writing the story, and Dragon Ball Super later contradicts it. Treat it as an optional side path, not part of the main order.
Where do the Dragon Ball movies fit in?
The Super-era films sit around Dragon Ball Super: Battle of Gods and Resurrection F were folded into Super, while Super: Broly and Super Hero continue the timeline afterward.
Where does Dragon Ball Daima fit in?
Daima (2024) is set in Age 775, shortly after the Buu Saga (end of Z) and a few years before Dragon Ball Super. Despite being a recent release, it is not a sequel that comes last; chronologically it belongs between Z/Kai and Super.
Do I have to watch the original Dragon Ball before Z?
It is strongly recommended. The original introduces Goku, his friends, and key rivalries that Z builds on. You can start with Z, but you will miss important setup and character history.
