Shannara Reading Order
Shannara spans 34 novels across eleven sub-series, and Terry Brooks' own advice for new readers is essentially publication order: start with The Sword of Shannara (1977). The chronological path exists but spoils the saga's biggest reveal, so save it for rereads.

Why this order?
Terry Brooks answers this on his own site, and his new-reader path is the one we follow: start with the original trilogy, The Sword of Shannara (1977), Elfstones (1982) and Wishsong (1985), then the First King prequel, then march through the sub-series in publication order: Heritage, Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, High Druid, Genesis, Legends, Dark Legacy, Defenders, and the Fall of Shannara quartet whose finale The Last Druid (2020) is the chronological end of the whole saga.
The famous junction is the Word & Void trilogy (1997-1999). Chronologically it is FIRST, a near-present urban fantasy, and every chronological list starts there. But it is excluded from the author's new-reader path for a reason: reading it first spoils the Genesis of Shannara's great reveal, the connection between our world and the Four Lands, which lands hardest when you discover it in Genesis. So we slot Word & Void late, once you know the secret it would otherwise give away.
The saga is growing again at the far end of the timeline: The First Druids of Shannara, set between Word & Void's era and First King, began with Galaphile (2025), and its second book, Brona, arrives August 25, 2026, notable as the first Shannara novel not written solely by Brooks (Delilah S. Dawson co-authors). One TV note: the cancelled Shannara Chronicles series adapted Elfstones, not Sword, so show veterans can happily start reading at book two.

Frequently asked questions
How many Shannara books are there?
Thirty-four novels across eleven sub-series, from The Sword of Shannara (1977) to Brona (August 25, 2026), plus the Small Magic story collection. The core saga's chronological endpoint is The Last Druid (2020).
What order should I read Shannara in?
Terry Brooks' own new-reader path, which this page follows: the original trilogy, then First King, then the sub-series in publication order through the Fall of Shannara, with Word & Void saved for late and the new First Druids books at the end.
Should I read Shannara chronologically?
Not on a first read: the chronological path starts with Word & Void, which spoils the Genesis of Shannara's great reveal about how our world becomes the Four Lands. Chronology is a rewarding second lap.
Where does Word & Void fit?
Chronologically first, but deliberately late in the recommended path: read it once you have met the Genesis era, so its connection to the Four Lands lands as a payoff instead of a spoiler.
What is The First Druids of Shannara?
The newest prequel series, on the founding of the Druid order: Galaphile (2025) and Brona (August 25, 2026), the latter co-written with Delilah S. Dawson, a first for the saga. A third book is planned.
Do I need the TV series, and which book does it adapt?
The Shannara Chronicles (2016-2017, cancelled after two seasons) adapted The Elfstones of Shannara, not Sword. It is optional viewing; show veterans can start reading at Elfstones without missing a step.
