Why this order?

Halo is the Master Chief saga: a sci-fi shooter epic split between original developer Bungie and current steward 343 Industries. The two orders here answer the two questions most people ask. Release order tracks how the series actually grew, console generation by console generation, and it is the order we default to. Chronological order rearranges the same games into the internal timeline of the story, which is where Halo gets interesting because its biggest twists are prequels and side-stories. Both orders run eleven steps: the eight mainline games plus three re-releases of games already on the list, tagged so you can spot them at a glance.

Release order is the safest path for a first-timer. You experience the cliffhangers, retcons, and tonal shifts exactly as Bungie and 343 intended, and the gameplay improves more or less steadily. The one wrinkle is that Halo: Reach (2010) was Bungie's last Halo and a direct prequel to the very first game, so playing in release order means the prequel arrives near the end.

Chronological order flips that. It opens with Reach, the doomed last stand that sets up Combat Evolved, then runs through Halo 2. Halo 3: ODST is the key gotcha: it unfolds in New Mombasa concurrently with the events of Halo 2, following ordinary troopers rather than the Chief, so it slots in alongside Halo 2 before Halo 3 proper. From there the line is clean: Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians, and Halo Infinite.

Which Combat Evolved should you actually buy? Three versions of that first campaign now exist. The 2001 Xbox original is the historical artifact. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (2011) is the 343 Industries and Saber Interactive remaster you get inside the Master Chief Collection, and its headline feature is a toggle that flips between the 2011 art and audio and the 2001 look, with the campaign sandbox left alone; it also folded in skulls, story terminals and online co-op that the original did not have. Halo: Campaign Evolved is the ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake from Halo Studios, and it launches July 28, 2026 after a short early access window for Digital Premium and Collector's Edition buyers. It is campaign only: four player online co-op, two player splitscreen on consoles, no PvP, plus three new Operation: METEORITE missions set about a year before Combat Evolved. It is also the first Halo released on PlayStation, it is day one on Game Pass, and it is a separate purchase from the Master Chief Collection.

Pick one version of that story rather than playing all three, and note that the choice moves nothing: whichever Combat Evolved you play, it sits in the same slot in both orders. If you want Halo's classic competitive multiplayer, or the other games in one box, the Master Chief Collection is still the purchase to make, because Campaign Evolved does not replace it.

Halo 2: Anniversary (2014) works differently again. It was built for the Master Chief Collection rather than as a standalone release, with rebuilt art, re-recorded audio and new Blur Studio cutscenes, and the only reason you can buy it by itself is that Steam sells the collection's components individually. It supersedes the 2004 original without erasing it, because the same classic toggle drops you back into the original presentation mid mission.

The rest of the practical picture: the Master Chief Collection bundles Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 with its Anniversary remaster, Halo 3, ODST, Reach and Halo 4 on Xbox and PC, which covers most of this list in a single purchase. Halo Infinite is sold separately on Xbox and PC. Halo 5: Guardians is the awkward one: 343 confirmed it will never be added to the collection, and it never received a full PC release, because the only Halo 5 content that came to PC was the free, stripped down Halo 5: Forge rather than the campaign. On PC and PlayStation, Halo 5 is the one mainline entry you cannot play. The Halo Wars real-time strategy spin-offs are a separate sub-series and are not included here.
